Open Unit Selection

I'm taking Geography with Study Abroad and there is a single open unit to choose, wondering if anyone has experience particularly in the uni-wide language units - thinking of taking beginner Mandarin but not sure how much it would be possible to learn in the year

I'm slightly intrigued, as the programme structure at https://www.bris.ac.uk/unit-programme-catalogue/RouteStructureCohort.jsa?byCohort=24%2F25&byCohort=Y&selectedCatalogue=PROGRAMME&orgCode=GEOG&programmeCode=2GEOG014U doesn't appear to allow language units.

That said...

My personal choice (if studying a language) would be to do one where I'm already familiar with the writing system. Having to learn to read and write a language that doesn't use the Latin alphabet would be a big factor for me.

There's an outline of the course at https://www.bris.ac.uk/unit-programme-catalogue/UnitDetails.jsa?unitCode=UWLP10013

Bear in mind that open units count just as much towards completing your year as your course's discipline-specific units do -- so don't treat your open unit as "it's not important (or, not as important) so I don't need to put in the effort".
