Engineering volunteering

I am a final year engineering student and was wondering if I could do a volunteering job at engineering companies as a way to boost my CV.
Am I wrong in thinking that they would only let you do admin work or would that be enough to show commitment to employers?

Thanks in advance

Any experience in general is good for your CV, if you can go for it

Why not consider internships? They are paid work experience and are a great way to get into industry when you don't have relevant work experience.
