Typically, not a lot. The hourly rate isn't high, most are self employed, and many take part time jobs on the side to make ends meet.

Unless you are able to secure a high paying contract through an agency or employer, you're very limited to what money you can earn.

The estimates are on the following pages:
https://www.prospects.ac.uk/job-profiles/counsellor (£20k-50k)
https://nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/job-profiles/counsellor (£27k-47k)
https://www.careerpilot.org.uk/job-sectors/therapy/job-profile/counsellor (£27k-47k)

I don't work as a counsellor myself though, but I do know friends who do.

He didn't. He did a level 2 and 3 qualification in counselling. He's currently doing a master's in counselling (approved by the BACP), but it's more than what's required.
