Bristol held my application

Hey,

I’ve applied to Bristol and the course is BSc Sociology with Study Abroad. My predicted grades are A*A*A and the requirements are AAB. I’ve just had an email from them saying that they are holding my application. Is that anything to worry about? Is that a bad thing? Is this normal?

Thanks

It's a pretty standard thing for Bristol to do. There's information as to what it means here: https://www.bristol.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/after-you-apply/your-application/decision/

Bear in mind that all universities have to consider all applicants who apply before the end of January equally.

I’ve been put on hold too for econ and finance which requires AAA and I’m predicted A*A*A*. They’re just playing hard to get fr

I think it’s somewhat positive - my course (AAA) has put me on hold (A*A*A), however last year, my sister was applying to Bristol and didn’t get out on hold and was ultimately rejected.
They are essentially just trying to let you know not to expect an update for a while, very reasonable & not a reflection of a future decision. Probably just due to waiting to see the number of applications they get before the January deadline (all applications have to be treated equally so if they don’t know the total amount of applications they have to be very cautious).
From another thread:

'On hold' is fairly meaningless, it doesn't mean anything one way or another. Just think of it as a courtesy to let you know it has been received and started to be processed

Nearly all applications go on hold at some point, unis just don't bother changing the status to let you know about it

Hey, Did you end up getting an offer? I have the same predicted grades and am looking to apply. Also do you know if Bristol focus on just grades or personal statement too?

hi, yes i did end up getting an offer! i got it around january. when you apply, bristol is known to take longer to send out their decisions so don't lose hope! i don't have too much expertise on this but bristol is rather competitive so almost everybody will have top predicted grades. therefore, i think they will look beyond the predicted grades (especially since those grades can be highly inflated) and will put more emphasis on the personal statement. just make sure your personal statement shows a diverse range of explorations you've done into your subject e.g. books, articles, podcasts, lectures etc and make sure your personal statement really indicates that you are passionate about your chosen subject. additionally, i thought it would be effective if you can link your subject to another a-level you're doing e.g. i linked sociology to macroeconomics. i did all this and it got me an offer so if your personal statement is also strong, it should get you an offer as well! so, i do think there is higher emphasis on the personal statement compared to the grades. they'd expect your predicted grades to be of a good standard but your personal statement is what will make your application stand out the most.

I've also just had the same thing for sociology with politics, sure its nothing to worry about, I think there's a lot of applicant this year so they're waiting until they have as. many as possible before. they make any decisions
