Durham Accommodation- First come first served?

Does anyone know how the Durham accommodation/college preferences work?

Is there any benefit to being early? (e.g. first come first served?).
Or is it all equal and generally a lottery as to whether you got your top preference(s)?

Any help appreciated

do you know when that selection process actually begins?

It says on this webpage about receiving allocations by a certain date but can’t find anything obvious about when it starts.

They do everybody at once - there is a page which explains how allocations happen. If I remember correctly last year that happened later then the published date. These are only provisional allocations and a reasonable number of people are reallocated after A level results day. After A level results day you receive a confirmed allocation (last year this took over 2 weeks for everyone to have a confirmed allocation). Durham says that people who have met or exceeded their offer have priority in not being reallocated but each year there are people in this category who are reallocated.
