Economics 2009 Clearing and Adjustment

This is the initial opening post for the 2009 Economics Clearing and Adjustment thread. Will add in the places at different unis as the situation comes known.
What about Adjustment?

What happened last year?
Here is the 2008 Economics clearing thread:
http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=643629

What advise would you give To economics students who on Results Day have not yet got a place?
i)Don't panic
ii)Do contact your firm/insurance and see if you can win them round. (Not very likely but you need to atleast try.) Mention evidence they do not have. e.g. your module marks. i.e. how close you were to a higher grade.
iii)Just because a uni not in clearing does not mean it has no places. (just that it does not want to advertise). Reasonable to ring round unis at the level of grades you achieved, even if they are not listed in clearing.
iv)check out what is in clearing:
http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13833180&postcount=39
v)Once you know the best offer you can get then decide if you want to re-apply next year.

Great I have contacted a numberof unis and got more than 1 offer which should I take?
If they have same typical offer then:
i)are they city or campus unis?
ii)How far are they from home?
Often people use the 2 hour rule:
More than that too far to take washing home
less than that and risk parents come unannounced on sunday morning....!!!

If I have a place should I take a GAP year and re-apply?
has to be your decision.
2 factors to consider:
i) How much better is your target uni than your current uni.
ii) How likely are you to get an offer from your Target.

I apologise in advance for any mistakes. Please let me know of any and I will attempt to fix them. Also the situation is (very!) dynamic both ways. So universities may get enough students and exit clearing. OR may discover they lack students and enter clearing. So please check UCAS yourself regularly

Hey Paul.

I'm a free agent, likely to get 3 A's in Economics, Maths and English Lit. I'm planning on speculatively calling up some unis tomorrow to see if they have places on their economics courses. UCL, St Andrews, Edinburgh and Bath were on my list of places to call but their websites are saying they are full - is there now definitely no point in calling them?

No it is certainly worth ringing up. As I explain in the Adjustment FAQ, unis that have a few spaces don't appear in Clearing. e.g. Warwick Economics Last year. Just be prepared to ring up numerous unis. i.e. currently none of the top 25 univeristies are admitting to any spaces for Home Economics. And I can't believe none of them have any spaces. You just need to find out where!

Do any of the places definitely with places appeal to you?

Okay, thanks. I'm only really prepared to go to a uni in the top 11 of your alternative table...so I'm expecting to be reapplying next year!! Just planning calls on the off chance somewhere good may have a place.

As always with clearing it is a fast moving confusing situation.
You might think that leicester would know their own situtaion.
And certainly worth the cost of a call.

It is a foundation year plus a 3 year 'normal' degree. It is designed for people without A-levels e.g. mature students. The foundation year is common amongst many different Bsc/BA courses

Ah ok, thanks for the response. Sadly, I don't fit the bill.

Btw, York have Econ for Overseas students. But surely that means that if those don't get taken up, then they will go to Home students. hmmm, might be worth a hopeful ring.

Yes I know York have places for overseas students (they are listed in post 2).
But no sadly this does not mean that if there are not enough overseas applicants they will go to home students. This is becuase the government will not pay for any more econ students to study at York.

Not being listed does not mean they have no places. So if you match their standard offer then you should ring them.

Well you need to want to study those subjects for a start!

Anyway I am going to sleep now: as should you guys.
i.e. if you end up needing places tomorrow you need to be mentally alert when you ring around.
