Travelling to uni

Hey, my first choice for uni is UWE (Bristol) and I live in Gloucester, so will be around about 40 minute travelling, either by train or car. I don't want to have to live in Bristol due to some family circumstances, however it's on my mind that maybe by living at home I will be missing out on the socialising side and won't end up making any friends? I know it sounds silly as you're there to get a degree but to some extent I still want to make friends and to be able to enjoy the socialising side, although I'm not massively into partying, so wouldn't want to do it week in and week out, only sometimes. Just wondering how everyone else would think I would get on? Thanks
The BEST part of first year was living in halls and socializing.
You're right, it's about the degree, but my first year at uni was also the best year of my life (and probably will remain high in the rankings forever).
I obviously don't know your family circumstances, but if there's a possibility you could decide to live in halls after all you really should, because it's really big and important when it comes to making friends.
Of course you still will make friends on your course, but mostly the people you become really close with (and the same will be for everyone else) is the people you live with.

I know tons of people who commute (from Exeter to Plymouth, about an hour's drive on a good day), and they seem to have settled in just fine. They've become more friendly with others who commute, rather than people in halls, but they are still close with people.

It does depend on the uni you're going to a bit. I don't know a lot about Bristol or Gloucester so I can't comment on them, but I know at the uni I go to (St Andrews) most people's main group of friends come from their hall/flat, although they might have other friends they met through societies/sports/their academic family/whatever. In contrast, one of my friends from home goes to Glasgow uni, stays at home and has to drive in every day, and she's made really good friends with a group of girls on her course who also live at home. It could be because more people stay at home and go to Glasgow than in St Andrews - I reckon very few people at the uni I go to are from Fife. Obviously it'll depend on you and your personality too though - if you're a fairly outgoing / not-shy person you'll find living at home a lot easier than if you're more reserved.
