What changes would you like to see to improve your RHUL experience?

Any other thoughts from new, incoming or students who are already here?

The college giving a damn about noise at night in halls and on campus.
They did bugger all last year for my halls (after >400 complaints from myself and others) and that totally ruined the experience for me.

On my course, I wish that RHUL would stop spending money on pointless vanity projects like being an olympic village and refreshed the equipment in my department, much of which is broken to varying degrees.
Also: my department cuts costs massively for fieldwork by providing the bare minimums, like some transport and most accommodation and leaves students to pay for everything else - food during the trip and baggage charges are the two big ones.
There's also rumours that on the day, we'll be told to pay for motel accommodation, which given that the trip starts BEFORE term and therefore student finance payments is not cool. They've done it without prior warning to every year group but the last, following massive complaints.

If the RHUL management would kindly stop giving the impression that they are trying to bankrupt the Earth Science department, that would really help.
Perhaps they could use some of their £5 million profit each year which is being put to no other good use? Or perhaps their £90 million pile of cash in the bank?

a.) there is no cost to the College for securing ‘the Village site’

b.) the only extra staff hired for the event on a fixed-term contract is the London 2012 Project Co-ordinator, whose salary is met by LOCOG (London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games)

c.) the installation of additional security equipment is provided and paid for by LOCOG

d.) the accommodation, food and staffing costs is based on the standard conferencing tariff and is revenue for the College

e.) transportation for the event is provided by LOCOG

f.) there is no relocation of services within ‘the Village site’; this is vacation period

a.) We can advise that due to the volume of numbers the revenue generated will be in excess of what is usual for this conferencing period. This will be reflected in the Annual Financial Statements which are published in the autumn ... There is no revenue from grants, advertising or sponsorship.

On the contrary, the College isn't spending any money at all on being an Olympic village and will be making a profit out of it. All the equipment and additional staff were paid for by Locog, who are also paying the College for use of their accommodation and catering services. I'm glad that the college is doing what it's doing best and profiting from the massive disruption they caused, but it's not like everybody in my department is asking for an ipad...
