£10 MILLION publically funded funeral for Thatcher?!?!!??!

Scroll to see replies

The thing is thatcher herself would never have wanted public money spent on her funeral. Say what you like about her, she would never have fiddled around with public money like the current lot seem to love doing.

This is just a shameful political stunt by Cam & Co. to try to remind the right wing electorate, who are deserting them in droves, of how conservative the tories once were.
My mum gets a pay freeze and that bitch gets a £10m funeral in the same vain as Princess Diana. Absolutely disgusting.
Maybe the £10m will provide a boost for the economy by stimulating demand.
That's a ridiculous amount of money to spend on a funeral!
The worst part is that it's publically funded...

Doesnt effect me, and doesnt effect the socialists on here who are actually kids rebelling against their rich parents.

I'm skeptical that its not going to be more than just £10mil

Frankly i think some of you are being a little ungrateful. Whether damaging or not in some communities UK GDP averaged 3.7% between 1982 and 1989 so considering all the money made in that time, for her to ask of £10m seems ungrateful.

Like it or not Thatcher will have people lining the streets in support (also a few nutters).

Think of the hot dog stands and t-shirts! :colone:

It's far less than we spend keeping the ****ing idle in booze and fags.

The real budget issue is the amount of money we spend on old people. Anything from their health care to their pensions, and it is only going to get worse. The fags and booze being given to the poor are fairly negligible in comparison.

The irony is, the people who are complaining about public money being spent on her funeral are the people who will be in the capital causing trouble, and further increasing the cost of policing :curious:

The 'Irony' I see what you did there

Only 25% of people are actually in support of it. Govt acting completely out of line with public sentiment as usual. Presumably we'll have to do the same when Blair dies now as well.

I'm not that idiotic, I'm not going to London for Thatcher
Well, you can't really blame them, unless the ones you are laying the blame for the inflated costs on are the troublemakers.

The Thatchers will be making an undiscliosed contribution which is fair enough since it isn't the business of anybody outside the family. No doubt this will cover undertakers charges and the like, and a reception afterwards for private guests. Pretty much as the case for any other family.

The rest will have been imposed on them. It's a rather ridiculous position to take that when the state wants to honour one of its citizens, the family should either pay the bill or refuse the honour. You'll be wanting OBE's, MBE's and CBE's to pay for their own medals next.

How much do you reckon the 'party' and the accompanying disorder will cost the country? Or is that OK because it's on 'your' side of the argument?

I reckon we could have given her a ceremonial funeral every day until Tony Blair is dead and still have spent less than we did on all the wars he brought us into.

Most of it is on security keeping the nutters away. The family is paying for the cremation, casket etc..

A senior Labour MP accused Downing Street of politicising the funeral of Lady Thatcher by naming it "Operation True Blue" only to be informed that the codename had in fact been created under the last government.
Shadow health secretary Andy Burnham, questioned whether the tag was "appropriate for a state occasion".
On Twitter, he said: "This is a difficult moment for many, particularly in the North, and the 'grown-up' thing to do is avoid any hint of politicisation."
However, Downing Street hit back, saying that the codename had been used in Whitehall since the funeral plans were first drafted under Labour.
A spokeswoman for David Cameron said that the codename had been in use since Tony Blair was in power. And the so-called "True Blue Committee" had been having meetings since at least 2006.

Well whatever David Cameron says, the Independent reckons it wasn't changed to True Blue until the Conservatives came in. It is a rag mind you

WTF!!!! I wouldn't care if it was like a normal couple grand funeral but 10 ****ing million???? what are they doing, having her stuffed with diamonds and sticking her in a solid gold show case for the british museum?!?!?!

why are we spending so much on this???? or have i got totally the wrong end of the stick? it's bloody ridiculous if it's true!

Only 0.013% of what she got us back from the EU. Think that is perfectly acceptable

It doesn't matter. The fact is she's dead. There are people living with serious problems for who that money could make a massive difference for
This is not my reasoning. This was the assertion of the Prime Minister and the Foreign Secretary used as a justification for the high spending. I did not state that I agreed with their assertion - which, as you say, is an unfounded justification.

It's a high-profile event which will need a lot of security. That costs. £10 million is a drop in the bucket in the government's budget, really. Not a big deal.
