^^ I have spoken to a couple of universities about this and neither one has said they expect the tests to be tested by interview, let alone by application. They do expect that, by interview, they have been booked though.

Yeah!

Glad to hear she was okay with giving you the reference. I guess they expect it as part of the teacher training process. How are you doing it - are you asking the head as well?

--------------------------------------------

E-mailed all my references to remind them today. My uni tutor said he would do it on Thursday. I'm a little worried about my school references because I'm counting on two people to do it as soon as poss. The teacher sounded fine about doing it fast, but the head didn't say much. I know headteachers are busy too, so hopefully it will be fine. I hate having to rely on people when I just want to get it submitted haha.

I've asked her to get the head to sign it off which she said would be fine.

I wouldn't worry too much about having a completed application, references and all, for dead on Thursday. At the end of the day course providers are spoilt for choice in terms of number of applications. They are going to want to pick the very best candidates and aren't going to be in a hurry to fill up courses straight away when they can wait for better applicants. I would be more concerned about the quality of the application rather than the speed at which it's processed. I'd rather have better more thought-out references that take a day or two more than a rushed one just to meet the opening date.

How do you know whether a university will go presentations or not?

Glasgow had an open day 2 weeks ago. I asked the lecturer. Most places also have the admissions structure on their pages.

I feel the same. I'm emailing my referee now in a panic because I haven't asked her yet! Everyone else seems so organised...

My university offer PGCE and they warned us that while a speedy application is appreciated, it won't be considered any more closely than someone who submits their application later. They don't admit anyone who isn't right for the course, so just have faith in your application.

Thanks  I didn't think I was too bad but I got worried when I read some of the posts on here! As long as he gets it done so I can apply by my key skills tests I think I'll be okay now.
I hope you get your reference sorted!!

Phew. Thank you very much, I think I was just having a little panic!

Hi Melanie! I was a wee bit worried about this too, but Glasgow is my top choice and they aren't doing presentations this year. I'm going for Primary but I think I would do something tied in with the Curriculum for Excellence.

Thank you! Glasgow is one of my choices too along with Strathclyde and UWS. Split between Glasgow and Strathclyde as top choices but as long as I'm offered a place at one of them then I'm happy!

Good luck!

I've found two places where I'd want to study an early years PGCE and I'm thinking for my third option I could either put a school direct place in (which is an early years primary place).. But I was wondering if I could put Leeds primary course which focuses on 5-9 age range? I don't know if my personal statement is too focused on early years... I've talked about my experience in EYFS and key stage 1 though

I know my uni says to avoid applications to multiple age ranges, but I think they meant at the same uni. Basically they want to see commitment to your age range (which is not the same as never being willing/wanting to explore other ages). If you think you can demonstrate this for both then go for it if it's what you want, but I'd imagine it'd be more likely that you have one which suits you the most so if stick with that. Again, personal opinions!

So, even if I have no financial help/support from my parents at all, if I am under 25 and have only been out of uni for 2 years, it still goes on my parents' income?

In most cases yes- see the below. It's silly IMO, 25 is not the standard age to rely on your parents' money until, but it's what the government expects when giving money.

Original post by alabelle
Does this mean you have to be completely self-sufficient for the three years? My parents send me some money towards living costs but this will stop at the end of my third year. I was hoping living away from home for 3 years would mean it'd be considered off my and my partner's income but maybe that isn't the case :/

You have to show evidence of how you've supported yourself for those three years, e.g. payslips. Not sure if student loans would count for this, sorry, but I would imagine they wouldn't.

Yeah after seeing posts on here I realise everyone is in the same boat with references. Mine seem quite reliable so I wouldn't imagine I'm going to have a massive problem. Should be fine!

Is this for primary? I've never heard that I need them booked by interview for secondary, and I know people who got in last year without them booked. I wouldn't want to book yet, because if I don't get in I'll be depressed when I'm cancelling everything haha.

I'm applying for secondary maths this year, and I thought that it would be more beneficial for me to spend the next 3 weeks volounteering twice a week and get 2 more days full experience in, and include that in my personal statement than send it off on the 21st but quite a lot less experience. If I sent off my application sometime around the 10th-14th of December, will it greatly affect my application? Since maths is a shortage subject and all that.
Argh bloody personal statement. I'm bang on 47 lines, sent it off to my careers service for them to have a look at. They generally said it was good but gave me quite a few things I need to include, but didn't tell what I could omit. So no idea what to cut out now. Once I've added in everything they've put, I'll probably end up on 60 lines...

You can still get offered a place if you haven't done (or booked) your skills tests, on the condition that they are completed by the time you start.
Hey guys,

One of the universities that I want to go to (St. Marys in Twickenham) do not specialise in Early Years.

I initially wanted to specialise in Early Years, so am a bit unsure now.

Do you think the specialism will effect me in the future?

Thanks

Yes, this is for Primary. I don't think it is a requirement that they are booked, the people I asked just said they expected it and that it is best to book earlier rather than later.
Should your principal referee be your academic reference (Lecturer at university) and then Headteacher from school secondary or does it not matter?

Thanks.

I'm doing Primary too, and have just got back from a PGCE meeting at a uni. Esmeralda is correct, you do not need to have them completed or booked for your interview, just for your start date.
For the personal statement, what font and size is it best to have it in while writing it in word to check it fits 47 lines? I keep seeing websites that say different things! Also in time for Thursday, do we just need to have references (kind of) sorted out and a personal statement? Or is there anything else we need to prepare for this?

Good point with the size and font. I hadn't thought of that. Ugh.

Yeah it's just references and personal statement really. Then the rest you should know anyway - qualifications, work exp, etc.

Veranda 11 I believe is what they use in the UCAS form.
