Offer from St Mary's for the Primary PGCE  Undecided whether to accept Roehampton or St Mary's! Any advice?

Woooo! Well done. Which one is closer for you?

Hi kpwxx,

May I ask - how busy are your breaks when on the PGCE?

Should I expect an overload of work during the Easter hols/Christmas hols etc?

Thanks x

Hi Hun,

Sorry to bother you again. I know that you did the PGCE last year so I am picking your brains lol.

I just wondered if you were assessed on your placements by senior members of staff or anything. Obviously the PGCE is teacher training and they don't expect you to be established yet, but I wondered if you were assessed to check your on track.

Thank you in advance!

On my PGCE (they vary in their approach to observations but, I think, are not TOO dissimilar overall):

We had 'block placements' - times when we'd be in our school every day for a series of weeks. I think the first was 4 weeks, the last was more like 6. We had three of these across the year, plus other time in school in the build up to each of these blocks.

>>The class teacher was present for a majority of the time that I was teaching, so it was kind of like being informally observed all the time!

>>During the block placements we had one formal observation a week. Half of the observations were from the class teacher, half of them were from my placement supervisor, a uni tutor (we had a different supervisor for each placement).
They filled in a form which had a running record of the lesson, had questions/suggestions and highlighted where you showed evidence of meeting the teacher's standards.

There weren't any general, formal arrangements for anyone higher to observe us. However, sometimes someone would end up being observed by someone higher like a department head or the head because their class teacher couldn't do it for some reason. And I think if you were struggling (and definitely if you were flagged up as a cause for concern) someone else from the uni would come in to observe you, to give an additional opinion/insight. I guess it's also perfectly feasible that someone higher in the school might want to have a look to see how you're getting on, but this would be more of an advice/checking your mentors are supporting you thing, rather than are you a good teacher or counting towards your assessment.

And no problem, ask away

Thanks  Roehampton is slightly closer but I would have to specialise (ks2) if I picked Roehampton -I'm worried that could hinder my chances of getting a job in early years in the future so leaning towards St Mary's as it's general primary. Will be quite a commute though (approx. 1 hr 10 mins) which is putting me off!

That's the reason I didn't apply to Roehampton in the first place so I know what you mean.

It will be about an hour drive for me everyday too. At least your placements could be closer to home, and you are on them more than you are at the Uni!

They mentioned that at the interview but I haven't had any more information about it! Is that what your letter was about? I've had nothing since I confirmed my place apart from a letter from UCAS!

It was just saying thanks for accepting and all the conditions and try have two days we might be asked to go in and sign a health declaration form or something. Nothing exciting! X

Yeah I think I might! What science document did you have to send over, if you don't mind me asking?

Yeah got them out the way before interviews, they are ok if you practice for them. Near Hexham, so just near by, what about you?

Has anyone applied/been for an interview for the National SCITT for Outstanding Primary Schools based in Nottingham? I have an interview for there - worried for the audits (english maths and science!!)

Has anyone got an interview on the 3rd of March for Birmingham City for PGCE general primary? I have 3 tasks to do that are in 2 parts, a general test with all the national curriculum subjects, self-evaluation test, group discussion and a one on one interview. Any advice on the self-evaluation task?I'm so nervous. Dreading the exam.

Sent my PGCE Computer Science application a few days ago and KCL have asked for me to send my transcripts from my first and second year of my degree. Apparently my university lecturer didn't include a predicted degree grade with my reference. Oops...
Wondering if anyone can help me? I got an email from Manchester offering me a place on the primary course, I was over the moon as it is my first choice. However, when ucas updated my profile a couple hours later it said unsuccessful. Any ideas why? I'll be gutted if I've missed out.
