I'm half English, half Italian. General consensus is that we've gone from shaming fat people to shaming models, so now skinny, or even average sized is bad, but being disgustingly obese is effing great. My Italian relatives literally bond over food, and not one of them is overweight. Social media blows up if someone gets called fat, and we've come to accept it as the norm.

Heeeey snap! I don't have a single overweight Italian relative and God we love food hahaha, I think it's more of what is the norm to eat in Britain? Here a lot of people eat like ready made meals/fast food/take aways, every Italian I know can cook fresh food very well

As long as it's not bullying i totally agree, but i worry people who are slightly chubby will start getting called out when they aren't fat you know? When does it stop?

and hot damn she's hot and she's also a red head :colondollar:

i forgot to add that i don't agree with the forced diets tho. If you're worried about the strain on healthcare maybe they should be given a time limit and if they haven't made progress in losing weight then in future they have to pay for all their weight related medical expenses? dunno man just brainstorming here.

People who are slightly chubby aren't really ever going to be called out, since it is normal. But the obviously fat people should be.

Yes, it just goes to show how you can transform yourself if you put the effort in.

We could do that, but then people will just cry out "fascist" or "discrimination" and whatnot. May as well go the full way.

Too many calories; not enough exercise

So a man is capable of grasping the concept that one problem being discussed does not automatically erase or demean the existence of another, it seems.

It's sexist because only women are under fire for high rates of obesity, when men here are exactly the same. And I know the attitude towards British women on this forum; I wanted to add in that British men are possibly in a worst state concerning obesity than women are before the frustrated little men come forward and wax lyrical about "hot East European women", and how substandard British women are. It's complete hypocrisy.

Plus, it's hardly the same thing as the feminist debate. Men and women face very different problems, but the issues that cause obesity for both genders are likely to be very similar, and the outcome is the same.

I'll ignore the slightly patronising opening, but I would like to say that obesity rates in women are apparently higher than men, according the University of Birmingham. That said, proportionally more men are overweight than women. That seems to suggest that women are more polarised in terms of weight.

http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/research/activity/mds/centres/obesity/obesity-uk/index.aspx

I would guess the whole 'hot Eastern European girl' thing would be an example of apex fallacy. I know obesity is pretty bad in Ukraine, for example, and is worse amongst the women than the men. That or, perhaps, women's weights are also very polarised over there.

All I'm saying is there's nothing sexist about the thread, you're just projecting that onto it.

Lol at the people claiming the Brits love food more than the Italians.

Its definitely the type of food. Italians tend to cook fresh whereas Brits just get ovenable sugar and calorie laden stodge.

Definitely. British food sucks. It famously sucks. We haven't got a good reputation in other countries whatsoever.

This thread is obviously not full of people who are experts at educating people and delivering health related interventions and know nothing about dieting and exercise. Just full of (mostly) men having a moan about fat women. It reminds me of the disgustingly sexist phenomenon that is 'slut shaming', but it's probably just because of the name.

The most important thing about weight loss (in my experience) is that the person has got to WANT to do it and has got to be involved in physical activity that they ENJOY. Shaming, bullying and making fun of people doesn't work. That will most likely cause that person to resort to what brings them comfort. Binge eating is a cycle, like depression. Breaking the cycle has to be through something positive. Of course it's a fight, but 'shaming' is not the right route to go. This problem is linked to poverty, education, class, etc, etc.

It's amazing how much of a difference education and introducing young people to new foods can make. Sometimes the difference can even start from showing people how to make a healthier alternative to a pizza. You don't just throw people in the deep end. You take small steps.

A lot of men just see what they want to see. Of course they would see 'hot and slim Eastern European girls' because they aren't paying attention to the other girls and they have huge stereotypes about Eastern European Women through the movies and porn.

I'd say poverty does have something to do with it, some people just don't have the time or money to cook things and so go for processed things instead. There does need to be a bigger push on getting a healthy lifestyle though, a change in attitude. Also the prices for water etc should not be more expensive than fizzy juice because that's just back down to the money issue.

Because for some reason people find it acceptable to be fat. I can walk up to a smoker and tell them how disgusting it is and how bad it is for their body and tell them to stop, and no-one would say anything against me. However, if I went up to a random fat person and told them how disgusting over eating is and how bad it is for their body and they should lose weight, people would boo and taunt me.

I seriously can't wait for the day when we can treat fat people like smokers. They don't have an illness or a addiction, they're just lazy and stupid.

Laziness and poor diets. Women expect things to be handed to them on a plate. There is little incentive to get healthy. Men are just as guilty.

Big is not beautiful. Put the cake down fat bitch.

I support fat shaming. Lack of self control and unnecessary greed is nothing to be proud off, and is an unattractive trait.

And suddenly because society is starting to promote this whole "big is beautiful" image, slimmer girls with an average BMI like myself are being slammed and degraded for our weight. For example phrases like "only a dog wants a bone" and "go eat some pies" are circulating the internet more and more these days. I have a very healthy body yet suddenly it's not desirable; many overweight girls seem to be jumping on the big ass/huge curves = "real woman" bandwagon and it's really damaging to think that way. Because a lot of the time it's NOT curves, but unhealthy excess fat that women are so proudly embracing. It's quite sad really.
That is an unfair comparison, as you are picking out the most expensive fruits. I could just as well say bannanas are dirt cheap in comparison to lindt chocolate.
Also, who the ****, who isn't a rich ponce, buys bottled water?

Well, you did drag feminism into it...

But I will concede that the OP's intentions don't appear to be explicitly sexist, though the article itself is. I made the post because I anticipated the sort of replies that are inevitable whenever the subject of "British women" comes up - as seen in the comments section of the piece.

Indeed. I'd like to see the actual figures to compare, but it doesn't look like any are provided. Regardless, the difference is likely small, and it seems pointless to focus on women when it's a problem for the entire country, including children.

In fact, the very article it refers to states 67.8% of British men are overweight or obese - again, why the focus on women? That's what annoyed me. I'm not expecting you to answer on their behalf, of course.

That's very interesting. Better keep quiet about it though, you'll destroy many a teenage boy's dream if you don't.

Oh, please. When have you been made to feel - or told - that your body is undesirable, apart from in the case of a few self-conscious women on the internet trying to make themselves feel better? Since when have men suddenly found slender bodies unattractive?

"Slammed and degraded", what drivel.
I love it when the right wing on here speak of 'those bloody feminists' because:

1) They most likely have never even read through an academic feminist article/book. Guardian articles don't count.

2) What feminists? Where? What feminists have said this? Are they like the boogeyman? Oooooo... the feminists with their burning bras are coming to get ya! !!!!

3) They are not aware that feminism has different schools of thought. Pigeonholing people as just 'feminist' isn't good. Many feminists disagree with each other all the time. Feminism isn't just some 'yah right on sister' BS.

Because here being fat is an inspiration. No kidding. Apparantly if you're fat, go against the odds and do pretty normal things. e.g. dancing, modelling etc, you're a true inspiration to all the ladies. For once please stop this. Being fat isn't being an inspiration. Skinny models are apparantly bad example, but obesity isn't even more, but britons seem to have forgotten this.
And another reason maybe because takeaways are literally just everywhere?
I've just got back from living in France for a year and it did used to me amaze me how women over there stay so thin. All they eat is red meat and carbs in bread, potatoes etc. Even eating fruit and veg wasn't really the norm. It's the second biggest market for Mcdonalds outside the US.. I found out over time though that it's definitely due to culture and lifestyle. In Paris for example there are hardly any lifts or escalators, everyone was forced to take the stairs all the time no matter what physical state they were in or how much they were carrying, it was completely frowned upon to snack and eat in public. In the supermarkets chocolate and crisps were super expensive and you could only buy bars of chocolate in big multipacks, which would cost 5/6 euros a time, so alot of people wouldn't buy it because it's so expensive. I remember if I ever went to buy snacks I'd be frowned upon by the cashier and one time I was even asked what I was going to eat for my actual dinner! I felt massive there yet I'm 'average' by british standards.

I've been back in the UK for about three weeks and I'm still kinda shocked by how fat a lot of us are, it's actually made me want to watch my weight more. I just think junk food is so much more readily available and so much cheaper to us here. I know a lot of people are saying that fruit and veg does work out cheaper and there is no disputing that, but if you can get chocolate for the same price than it's logical most people are going to go for the chocolate because it tastes nicer. Chocolate is forever on offer in the supermarkets and piled up at the end of tills so many people just think 'oh I'll have just the one' not really noticing that it adds up. We work longer hours than most of the Europeans and are encouraged to have short lunch breaks and eat on the go which encourages the market for ready meals, where as many other on the continent get two hour lunch breaks and don't really work past 6pm. I think it's a shame it's acceptable to be fat because it's not attractive nor healthy.
