What your son has gone through with school is too common unfortunately. I've seen/heard about it too many times & sometimes kids are being kicked out of school when all they needed was to listen to parents, diagnose and provide extra support. I agree it something all teachers should do. I'm gonna be doing SD sec and we only have 2 weeks in a SEN school - it's really not enough. I've heard horror stories from my college students saying they weren't all per to take GCSEs because they're not able & being hidden away when Ofsted come 😡 Without specialist training for teachers this is what happens. It should be mandatory for everyone. I've got 3 weeks left in my job until I finish for the summer hols. So excited to finish & start my course (whenever that is!)
Sorry for the essay!

Since we have forced them to to be fair they have been good - weekly meetings with the teacher (behaviour is quite extreme) art therapy, behaviour charts, emotion charts etc. But it now means his first camhs meeting is mid July after school finishes so no intervention at school til next year. He is in reception and struggle with structured learning and year 1 is Obv mainly structured learning. We were hoping would be before end of term but unfortunately not!

Geez 2 weeks on a Sen course?! That's so low! My normal schools direct is mainly 4 days a week every week in a school! You would have thought would be at least half?!

I finish 13th August seems like forever (I am a receptionist atm so not related at all!) my sons 3rd birthday 14th then a few weeks rest before chaos haha x

I've started some reading on teaching techniques & behaviour management stuff but nothing subject related yet. Got the NC printed out & need to go through it and recap on subject knowledge. It's been 3 yrs since I graduated (feels so long!) I'm trying to bind my time & not think about it too much.

Haha, I know what you mean, I graduated in 2011! But in my job, I have a lot of ability to think about things unrelated to the task I am doing, so I can't help but think about things. I've got a KS3 maths book, just to make sure that I am capable of teaching more advanced students  and I've also got the NC ready to roll

Yes definitely I graduated in 2010 so feels so long ago! (I did redo a module in 2013) been rejected so many times too so want to make sure I do well!

I'm really interested in SEN, my step son has Aspergers (well all involved - us, school and counsellor think so we are going through CAMHS atm taken so long to get an appointment!) really think it should be compulsary to do something as a teacher. For 6 months step son was excluded from class, sent out for being "naughty", had class time taken away etc. We kept saying something wasn't right but the teacher wouldn't listen, we took him ourselves to a private counsellor and now we are going through camhs  it took us going to a counsellor to get the SENCO involved and finally have school backing.

Sorry turned into a bit of a rant haha!

Still feels like so long away though and my job at the moment is so boring but pays well just frustrating! X

I agree that teachers need to have a knowledge of how to spot SEN and various things that could create "behavioural issues". While I haven't had any myself, and will probably only get a week or so during my primary SD, I have had a long time volunteering with adults and children with a variety of disabilities and SEN, so I am pleased to say that I won't be heading into a classroom thinking that children are just misbehaving  Its always so upsetting when children are misunderstood - I hope it doesn't cause trust or confidence issues for your step son later on
I accepted my place for Secondary English in December and have an induction in July to find out about my placement school etc. So excited! But also terrified! Will be good to meet people on my course though as I currently feel like I am the only one...

From what I've gathered, SD is much more hands on than the traditional uni route, so I'm mentally preparing myself for hell in the first couple of months (and probably for the rest of the year haha!) but honestly can't wait to get stuck in.

Has anybody been doing much prep? I finished uni for the Summer so trying to read as much as possible that is likely to be on the syllabus (hello Jane Austen..) and I've heard about a couple of books onbehaviour which seem to be trainees' holy grail source of info, but not got them yet. Until the induction i feel like theres not much I can do, but want to be prepared where possible!
Hi everyone!
I'm starting School Direct Primary with Leeds Beckett University in September. I had my interview and confirmed my place in January. The time has gone so quickly and I can't believe it's nearly time for my pre-induction week in July. I can't wait to start the course, although I share some of the apprehensions of others (in terms of workload etc.)
Just waiting for my degree classification which is revealed tomorrow!!
Is anyone here doing a SCITT with the east mids teacher training partnership? I'm still waiting to hear about start dates & I'm wondering if I'm the only one!
Found out my main placement today 😃 it's a school I used to be a TA in so know a lot of the teachers, all the SLT, the school and procedures 😊

Will be there autumn term and again in summer term! Feeling more excited now x

I found out my main placement too, its a really nice grammar school not too far from me. So excited! Got my induction tomorrow so will be fab being able to finally meet people on my course... still convinced that I am the only one on it!
I am starting an unsalaried School Direct placement in September and am really excited about it.

However I have yet to receive any information regarding the school or myself starting- I have emailed the person whom identified as being in charge of School Direct when I was interviewed but from past dealings I know they are unreliable in getting in touch with me.

I'm now a little concerned because as far as I know I'm just going to show up in September with no idea where to put myself :/
I only found out yesterday! Have you had any info about a meeting before end of term? Mine is next week but apart from that and being told what school haven't heard anything else! No timetable or anything. Could you call?

How did you manage to get in touch with your school? No I've had nothing- I've called but I'm reserved to keep trying as like I said in the past the reception have just relayed the message that the person I need to speak with is very busy. I dont really want to get off on the wrong foot with anyone if I am working with them for a year! The only thing I can think of doing is enquiring with the SD partnership.

When I was interviewed I was given information on the Friday afternoon for a Monday morning interview, including mini teach, so now I assume the school are just quite disorganised.

Ahh all my queries have been through the person at the lead teaching school but she has a west herts partnership email not the school one.

I would just email again? I'm lucky a lot of the paperwork from last year is still up on the website so I have been able to have a look at that to get some idea!

I don't know what year or anything yet though!

From research I know this will be their first year as a teaching school so there is no info online either :-( I am just worried in case it gets too late without hearing from them.
Sorry I mean on the partnership website my school doesn't have any info on the website either (they aren't even officially in the alliance of schools until September!)

I'm in the same boat as you! I've not heard anything from my school about start or induction dates and I'm starting to get worried. Have u heard anything yet?

How frusting! People at work keep asking me then I'll be leaving to start the course and I'm like...😳
I am assuming we start on the 1st day of term (or inset day as is often the case in sep).
I would always suggest emailing because people don't always get telephone messages. Also it gives you ammunition to say how many times you have tried to contact them.

Hi Tracey! Congratulations on getting a place! I would just like to ask which school you are doing your school direct through? Just as I have had 2 offers recently, one with Sacred Heart in Fenham and one with The Academy at Shotton Hall, the latter which awards PGCE from Durham University. I also applied for a PGCE for Durham Uni and have an interview on Tuesday, but not sure whether or not to just make a choice based on the two offers I've already received.
Thanks

Hi everyone! I've had two conditional offers in the last two days and have been struggling to decide which one to go for! I finally accepted and wrote to the school today to accept (I'm enrolling on a SCITT course with PGCE awarded by Durham University) and wondered how we accept the offer on UCAS? There seem to be no buttons but one school told me if you don't accept within 10 days, the offer is 'declined by default'! Please can anyone help? Thank you!

I have emailed them and they replied saying it might be 7th sept but this isn't defo yet - they're still deciding & will confirm ASAP. I found the 7th as a start date odd when the schools start the week before... I'm in FT employment & have to give 6 weeks notice - getting worried now. Don't know when to resign & want to earn as much money as poss before i start the course. So darn frustrating!
