I have Aspergers...

I have just seen a thread on here asking about 'autistic sayings', which admittedly made me a little annoyed. So now I've started this one. Ask me anything you like, whether it's about Aspergers or not.

I used to be ashamed of my 'difference' and tried to hide it before I realised that I couldn't let it take over me, it's only a little part of who I am, not my whole life.

I'm in the closet of the disorder (why didn't you make this in the mental health section so that i can be anoymous lol)

I can't mention this to anyone because it will then confirm why everyone undermines me.

how long did it take for you to accept it. I have had it for 10 years and it has made me severely depressed.

The ones I have personally been told are that we don't want to have friends, we're unsociable. That's not true, I have long desired to make friends but my social skills aren't the best, to say the least. I find it awkward to talk to people but at the same time I want the close friendships that others have.

Another one is that people with AS are thick. I got told I'd never get a Maths GCSE or get into University. I got an A in Math - still waiting on the Uni thing though haha

Those are the main ones I personally have experienced, but there are more here if you're interested

I made a long one in the General Health section a while ago

Hmm... it took me about 8 years and a great school to be able to speak of it like this. The first time I really spoke about it was at a conference when we had a mental health discussion. No-one judged me for it at all and I guess that's when I realised I couldn't let it become my whole personality.

I'm sorry it's made you feel this way :frown: Try to think beyond the disorder and what aspects of your personality are strongest

Aspergers is officially a learning disability but also has associated mental health problems. I'd say the best description is communication problems really
Don't worry about what some (insert words here) was saying. :h:

That is, unfortunately, one of the myths. I used to be, now I'm better at analytical subjects. I guess there are lots of Aspies who rely on logic and only-one-right-answer subjects like those, though. There does tend to be one area where we're strongest at, and that can change. Personally I'm good at remembering years, ages, dates etc. but I don't want to go into History. I want to go into Politics to help end disability stigma

Best succinct definition:

a mental condition, present from early childhood, characterized by great difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and in using language and abstract concepts.

Except replace mental condition with neurological disorder because it means were wired a little differently

I'm not  I just started this thread to help make people realise how it can affect people and the symptoms are not universal but differ between each Aspie

They said i will outgrow it. But nope, it manifested to Social Anxiety and depression and i'm possibly having Bipolar/Personality Disorder but afraid to go to the GP.

It's great you have accepted this horrible disorder, its just so sad why it exists and it does depress me when i think of it every night :frown:

You can't outgrow Aspergers, you just learn to adapt to society I guess :frown: I have an anxiety disorder as well though that too has improved. I'm lucky really, my last college was horrible and there was no support whatsoever but my present college has been brilliant.

Go and see the GP. It is terrifying I know but getting a diagnosis can help so much, trust me. Take someone with you if you need to!

It's not unfounded though. Aspies are more likely to be good at those subjects.
But as you say,

Aspies do tend to focus more on those subjects so it's not a complete myth. It would, however, be more suited to say that each Aspie specialises in a different subject, so to speak. Mine is Politics, for example

Do you think you benefit from the diagnosis and does it help you to come to terms with and deal with difficulties in your life? I've had a few professionals say "yeah, you probably have Asperger's" but I've never been diagnosed or properly assessed or anything and I feel somewhat uncomfortable with the lack of closure.
