Hey, I applied for EEE at imperial, UCL, Leeds and Sheffield and engineering at Cambridge.. Did you hear back from any of your others uni's?

Posted from TSR Mobile

I've done my interview at Imperial, they said I should be hearing back from them 2 weeks after the holidays, so in about 1 week. My Southampton interview is on the 2nd week of Feb.

GL with Cambridge, i was contemplating on applying there as well, but in the end decided against it as the I disliked the idea of doing 2 years of general too much. Might I ask, what was it that got you to apply for general at Cambridge? Is it just because of Cambridge or do you want to do general?

Thanks, waiting for my response but I'm not very hopeful for it. I think it was because of Cambridge but I don't mind doing general, choosing EEE was a bit of snap decision.

Good luck for imperial, is that where you want to go?

Yeah! Its graduate prospects is what appeals to me so much and I'm set on EEE, so general felt like a waste to me. However, if they reject me, I would also love to go Southampton as their ECS department is top notch as well

I think even if I did do general, I'd end up specialising in EEE. I never looked at Southampton because it just seemed so far away but a lot of people I know have really liked it

Yh i get that, it's the furthest one for me, (live near Manchester). Any idea as to what subfield of eee you might be interested in? Digital electronics - circuits and systems seem to be what I'm interested in the most. Obviously that can all change by the time I'm choosing my optional modules in 3rd year

Apparently the labs at Southampton are one of, if not the best in the UK. Looking forward to visiting it in February. How good is leeds/Sheffield? Never considered those

I live near Manchester too, but never ended up applying to Manchester because they don't let you do a study year abroad with EEE. I think it was the energy and power field that attracted me most, at the moment I can imagine myself working in the renewable energy sector. I really liked Leeds, it was one of the best I'd been too, the facilities and the course were both amazing. Sheffield has just opened the diamond building for engineering this year, so has brand new facilities. They're both good uni's, they just don't have the reputation like imperial or UCL.

Ah I see, Leeds sounds amazing. I think the reputation is important to me as it's possible I might want to go into the finance sector if im burned out by EEE after 4 years, hopefully not :yep:

Where would you like to spend the year abroad? I don't think I'd do one but if i did, id try to get into MIT or caltech, or whichever US uni is on offer. (horrible with other languages except spanish)

Usually it's only universities that your uni has links with, I haven't seen any with links to MIT bar Cambridge...

I think imperial might have, but i checked ages ago. I'm nearly certain they have links to caltech, which would still be awesome to go Imo.

And yh, i realise thats its unrealistic unless your uni has the links. I guess the more 'prestigious' the uni, the better the links in this scenario, generally.

I'm glad because Southampton has contacts with three unis in Australia, so that's definitely a goal of mine

I'm in a similar situation, and I want to work abroad too so the universities reputation is quite important. I'd like to go the U.S, I've not really thought about specifically where in the U.S. Somewhere like MIT or cal tech would be amazing but I can imagine really competitive too

Hmm yh i guess only a few every year get to go. My dream is to work in Silicon Valley, or for a global tech company. San Jose all the way!

Do you think Manchester has good rep for engineering internationally? (Mainly US) as if I get rejected by imperial, i may consider insuring them, with Southampton as firm

That's cool! Might I ask, why Australia? Never considered working or studying there tbh

haha every tech kids dream is silicon valley.
I think Manchester is a great university, its number 33 in the QS world rankings. If it wasn't for the study year abroad, I probably would have put it down as my firm or insurance.

Just always loved the idea of spending time in or living in Australia or New Zealand. Never been to either but I so desperately want to :3

I am first year student and I am having problems with the subject. I am attaching the questions with this message, can you help me with any of them.

Thanks for your reply.

Which part are you struggling with? do you know whats going on in the feedback diagram? often its understanding the basic theory if you don't then it feels like rocket science I've been there myself haha

You can justify the control architecture you chosen mathematically using the transfer functions for each control loop, most people find the math intimidating but its actually really really easy! if you get passed that stage, I can see why your struggling with the assignment though there is a lot to process when does it have to be in by? I have included a power-point and a few links that I think might help, and your welcome am always happy to help.

Hmm ive been considering the finance route after the EEE burn out aswell aha
Whats your thoughts on Engineering grads going into finance, alot go into Quants side of IB. Like wise how easy would it be as EEE students compared to Maths and Econ students, (I've heard if you attend a target uni, firms approach you for financial chats over coffee lmao) On the fence about finance though, not prepared to sell my soul just yet

Hi! I got offers from Bristol, Manchester, Bath and Leeds. Still waiting for Southampton. What do you suggest me to do?

I think its a lot more common than before, from what I've heard, of engineering majors going into finance, especially back office roles (technical stuff). Heck I even read somewhere that employers prefer engineering/technical background for BO. To go front office, you'll prob have to gain some extra experience like a summer internship or a postgraduate qualification.

Oh and in terms of ease of getting into it, firms obviously realise you're clever if you're doing engineering at a target uni, eg imperial, especially if your on track/get a first. But I think to land a job and even get interviewed, we would have to show a lot more enthusiasm and dedication to finance. I say that as to even get to an interview, you prob have to convince them your not doing it JUST for the money.

I'd deffo sell my soul if i was offered a 50k job before graduating, with very quick salary growth :top:
