AQA Sociology Unit 1 17/05 & Unit 2 23/05 - Official Thread 2016

Is it required to evaluate feminism with other theories such as functionalism, marxism, etc...
If so how can u link it to feminism? Can u explain it please :smile:

In any essay on perspectives it is almost essential to evaluate it against another at some point in your essay.

In terms of an essay on feminism, your basic outline would focus on Liberal, Marxist, Radical and Difference feminism and any other aspects relevant to the question.

When evaluating Liberal feminism, you can argue that it ignores underlying structural causes of women's oppression such as patriarchy and capitalism. This would then lead you on to Marxism and Marxist feminism and explain concepts such as women being a reserve army of labour, absorbing men's anger and reproducing the labour force by socialising their children into workers.

If the question asks you to simply assess Feminist contributions, you can tie in other topics such as the division of labour; talk about how feminists see the nuclear family as a patriarchal institution as it keeps women subordinated into their housewife role. You can then use functionalism to evaluate this, they argue that the nuclear family is in fact functional for the family and that the DOL is natural - based on biological differences.

It's okay, i like answering questions because it is a form of revision LOL.

I'm in year 11 doing AS sociology (old spec) and I don't know much because my teacher wasn't able to teach me it. Do I need to know much to get an A at least? Okay, let me not aspire too high, a B at least? I'm doing families and households this Tuesday and Education and Research Methods on 24th?
Is there a structure to an essay? Do I need sociologists to support each point I make? How do I write an intro? Am I able to ******** in this exam (I do know some things) , I'm just stressed someone please help :smile:

I'm sitting the education Tuesday and families and household 24th, which parts are you most stuck on.Your essays should be structured with an introduction, 3-4 paragraphs depending on the the question, a conclusion with use of some of your better examples and theorists.To boost your grade boundary from what you are at; mentioning a sociologist and their view point/theory for each and example is highly recommended. You need to introduce the theory, explain and use complex sociology terms to show your understanding of the question and sociology.To write and introduction is fairly simple, it never has to be big (I'd also recommend leaving 3-4 lines before writing your first paragraph just in-case mid exam you deicide to add more to it) you need to reword the question: "applying your knowledge from item A and your own knowledge, evaluate the view that differences in educational achievement between social groups are the result of factors and processes within schools." you would write "the differences in educational achievement between social groups is a result of other factors other than social class. These factors are ethnicity, gender and the role of education. For example, although white boys GCSE 'succession' of 5 A*-c including Maths and English has been increasing it seems that white girls have been exceeding the school system, this can be because of factors in the education system such as coursework. Looking at what affects pupils in succeeding at school and determine what factors affects the pupils the most." for example. I'd say another key tip is never to mention "I" in an exam especially your introduction, never say "in this essay I will..." examiners hate it.Good luck

Are you sure? Our predicted grades go on UCAS, teachers will use these in contribution but our efforts throughout the year will also count, most people dont do as well in AS as they hope.

Im re-sitting the old spec but I assume they do the same thing they've always used AS results as UCAS tend to need recent exam results in real exam conditions.
