Mature student accom.......

I have been to an applicant day today at BCU and have decided that I will be studying there. I am 23 from Cardiff so am obviously looking to move up to Birmingham. Am I to old to be staying in halls? should I be looking for housing? if so how do I go about that as ill know no-one. Any ideas would be great.

Why do you think you might be 'too old' for halls at 23? It's hardly over the hill! I would say halls is a great way to meet a bunch of people, throw yourself fully into uni life and not set yourself apart as a 'mature' student.

As above - you are not 'too old' for Halls etc, but if you would prefer being in a flat share with those of a similar age, try Student Spare Room, for rooms in existing flatshares etc : https://student.spareroom.co.uk/

Appreciate you getting back to me. I don't really have an answer to that. I personally thought that only 18-19 year olds stay in halls and that it would maybe be frowned upon for someone of 23 to be staying in halls.

You're welcome.

I don't think it would be in any way 'frowned on' for you to stay in halls in your first year. And you won't be the only one not 19-years-old, so that will be an added benefit.

I'd say that if you're prepared to put up with the challenges that communal living will inevitably present (noise, sharing bathrooms and kitchens, that sort of thing) then halls might be a much better option that private renting. A lot of it is going to depend on your personality - how gregarious you are, how much you value your own space and own facilities, that sort of thing.

Universities often group people together for things like this so you may end up with some postgrads or other young/mature students so that you are with people of a similar age.

Hi mate I'm off to BCU in September and I'll be in halls also - I'll be 29 by that time!! I'm in the forces though so we have our own wing in the halls. I'm from Swansea. I don't think you should worry too much about making friends there, as long as you like a social life then you'll be fine. What are you going to be studying?

Hi mate, cheers for getting back to me. Looking to study Psychology. what about yourself? haha I'm not a boring bloke, was just concered I was abit old. Great help though mate, appreciate it.

I'll be doing ODP. I think both of us will be at the South Campus. I was slightly worried about making friends too going by the age difference. We should stay in touch to meet up come September time.

Not too old to stay in halls at all. Both myself and my flatmates are in our 30's and in halls. People stay in halls for all different reasons including mature students e.g. international students, disabled, don't want to travel, cheaper, to socialise etc.). Do what's right for you 🙂

Hey, I'm 31 and I will be staying in halls near city south, I have had the little voice in my head whispering to me about being 'too old' as well though so its nice to see i'm not the only one!

A few postgrad students at my uni used to stay in halls with first years. I had to stay in halls in my final year (I was 22 turning 23), and my housemates were all 18. It was fine, the only reason they annoyed me was because I was doing my dissertation and they were obviously only just getting started with uni - but you shouldn't have that problem as you'll also be a first year! Halls are pretty good for getting to know people, especially during freshers week, everyone just sort of chats to each other.
