Two Conservative local election candidates and a woman honoured with an MBE are among 40 new self-professed Tory members who have shared or endorsed racist and inflammatory Facebook posts including Islamophobic material, the Guardian has learned.

The torrent of racist posts include references to Muslims as “bin bag wearing individuals”, calls for the “cult” of Islam to be banned and the Qur’an being branded an “evil book”.

One female Tory supporter even called for a boycott of Muslim-owned shops and endorsed another comment labelling the religion’s followers “sub-human” and “cockroaches”.

Both of the council candidates – one of them claimed “Islamophobia was not surprising” in a rant about Muslims and said he would celebrate the death of the anti-Brexit campaigner Gina Miller – have now been suspended.

It comes as the Conservative party faces mounting pressure over its handling of Islamophobia. The Conservative peer Sayeeda Warsi has said Theresa May is “burying her head in the sand” over the issue and has led calls for a party inquiry.

Mohammed Amin, chairman of the Conservative Muslim Forum, is also calling for party chiefs to hold an inquiry into Islamophobia. He told the Guardian: “The serious question the Conservative party has to ask itself is: what is it about the image that it is projecting that causes people with these views to think they belong in the Conservative party?

Well if we are going by the technical definition of Islamophobia which is fear of Muslims OR Islam itself, then yes it is Islamophobic as those quotes show the hatred towards Islam.

I'm catholic and not at all inclined to go back to the ancient days of automatically branding all other religions "heresy"/"cults".
Or resurrecting age old tribal based sectarianism.

No breaking news, I remember Griffin and Wilders making these comments nearly a decade ago.
Those quotes may show hostility towards an abrahamic religion but they do not indicate anything resembling a phobia.
Phobia means irrational fear not hatred or ideological opposition.
Coulrophobia, cynophobia, aquaphobia and arachnobia- irrational fear of clowns, dogs, water and spiders.

I wish people would see beyond the sensationalist headlines, angry identity politics and hysterical reactions of the outraged.
The UK does not have an forbidden thoughts list or opinion police.

I really like your second part about phobias. These days everything is a phobia/phobic and people are -ists, just for disagreeing ideologically/politically. The last part is also very accurate. So thumbs up from me. Edit: can't, PRSOM

Please do not conflate irrational fear and hate, when you do that you are handing a lifeline to bigoted hate criminals who desperately try to avoid punishment by dishonesty attributing their vile hate fueled actions to genuine fear.
This has led to gay bashing scumbags escaping criminal sanctions in the US by hiding behind the gay panic defence.
The phobia in relation to hate crime bigotry is a dishonest narrative and uses dishonest rhetoric, I'll explain why below.

A phobia is an irrational fear, not hatred or ideological opposition.
Aquaphobia is irrational fear of water, coulrophobia is irrational fear of clowns, cynophobia is irrational fear of dogs, arachnophobia is irrational fear of spiders.
I have friends who are aquaphobic, coulrophobic or arachnophic.
When they encounter water, clowns or spiders- they show fear.
Freezing, fleeing or crying.
Then when the danger is gone anxiety that the feared will return.
No hatred, abuse, violence or threats.

I know a few people who are genuinely afraid of gay people.
Most of them as a result of horrible, bigoted lies told by relatives.
None of them hate gay people or want to harm them in any way.
Finding out somebody is gay or seeing someone they know is gay, always results in them fleeing- running away in the opposite direction.
They would never abuse or attack a gay person, they are terrified not thuggish or hate filled.
As in they have an irrational fear of gay people.

Those who commit hate crimes and then claim the gay panic defence when they are put on trial are liars.
The gay bashing bigots admit to unprovoked attacks upon random strangers, claiming that the believe that it is a reflex action to bash up gay people .
They justify this bizarre and disgusting assertion by trying to disguise it as self-defence and pretend that they are so scared by the sight of a gay person that their automatic reflex is to violently attack them- while openly admitting that they will never attack people who are heterosexual.
Simply hate crime against gay people, often premeditated and something of a habit for gay bashing thugs.
Some US lawyers have a habit of representing gay bashers, presenting the gay panic defence and getting their clients acquitted with it.
Often those lawyers are openly hostile to LGBT rights, speak in support of conversion therapy to try convert gay people or talk about 'praying away the gay'.
These are the way how they show their hatred and bigotry against gay people.
Gay bashers show their hate and bigotry in another way.
