Feel stuck got rejected for NHS help?

I'm 21, I've had moderate depression for a few years, it comes and goes often and I went to my GP to get some help. I got passed on for a referral and got rejected for any support, they said I never met the criteria. They said I should contact the uni I attend instead. Any advice?

What was the referral specifically for (Primary care service like IAPT? or secondary care service like a CMHT?)? What criteria didn't you meet? I'd follow up with your GP, see what they say. In the mean time, it is worth going to your university's student support department and go from there. If your MH is impacting your ability to study and you've struggled with it for a long time it might be worth seeing if you might benefit from DSA - your university should be able to let you know more. But this would give you access to a specialist mental health mentor who could help you manage your MH alongside studying.

I was referred for CBT at my nearest hospital, the said in the letter I wasn’t serious enough to meet the conditions for therapy from the NHS board, It takes weeks to get a GP appointment I. my area. I was on a waiting list for 6 months before they decided. I have dyslexia so already receive DSA.

It might be worth asking for a top up of your DSA to add a specialist MH mentor then? I'm sorry to hear you've been left to deal with it on your own. :console: Have you got anyone around you to support you currently?

My partner faces the same problem, she has moderate depression too and got rejected, she’s slightly younger and is 19. I think she struggles more than I do to be honest.

Unfortunately this seems to happen a lot. :frown: But yes, speak to your GP and your university's student support department, and it might even be worth seeing if your local MIND has any services too.

Thanks for your advice, I'll arrange another doctors appointment and see what they say. My partner will probably do the same, it's just very frustrating to be honest.
