9th coronavirus patient took Uber taxi to hospital

https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2020/feb/13/london-coronavirus-patient-turned-up-hospital-uber-taxi

🤦*♀️

The Chinese national (who caught the virus in China before flying here, so no spreading within the U.K. yet) took an Uber to the hospital rather than following advice to call 111, in doing so could have infected the driver, other passengers after her, and staff and patients in the A&E.

This news comes after over 14,000 new cases are reported and over 242 deaths occur (reaching over 60,000 total cases). This significant rise is due to new diagnostic methods, meaning there may have been many previous cases which have not been documented. If these cases are just about all minor, the recorded death rate may decrease.

Following the advice of calling 111, and staying isolated until analysed, if suspected symptoms appear, is significant in helping to prevent the spread. While the virus presents as a cold or flu for most (80% of cases it seems so far), if it infects the elderly, very young or those with underlying health conditions it is more likely critical or fatal. The vast majority of fatalities have been in people over 60 or those with underlying conditions.

It seems 18% of cases with an outcome have resulted in death so far, hopefully this number will decrease as more start to recover, since recovery will probably take longer than time taken to die.
Chinese social media is furious with her. Saying that shes embarrassed/disgraced China by being so irresponsible in another country.

Can’t imagine she would have gotten away with it in China. I’m surprised the British government haven’t stepped up with the measures. Of course they have given advice, but they should know advice isn’t always going to be followed (I remember a guy threatened to leave quarantine despite a contract before a new law was brought in allowing people to be forcefully quarantined).
