Accounting

I am interested in a career in accounting and finance.Recently I have found financial modelling such as building statements and forecasting interesting. But I do not know how it applies to jobs. Which jobs include these skills. Is it in public accounting such as the big 4 or in industry

It depends on the context, but it can come up a lot in investments.

Corporate finance will use a lot of those skills. However, you can have bits of that in management accounting (budgeting), investment management, equity analysis, financial analysis (industry).

If you're looking for a predominantly accounting role, then consider corproate finance at one of the big 4 or as a management accountant. You can sort of do it as a financial analyst in industry though.

Whilst the sort of careers you want to get into are very competitive by nature, you will have a particularly hard time with investment management and equity analysis.

To see how it applies in job settings, there are courses on udemy on this, but it comes with a fee (depending on whether there are discounts available and when you buy it). There are courses sold by Kaplan as well.

The typical qualifications you're looking at are CIMA, ACCA, or ACA for accounting based jobs (unless your employer asks you to do another specific accounting qualification).
For the investment sector, you would be looking at the moe difficult CFA,

I'd recommend looking on National Careers Service website for more information on the above roles, as well as speaking to people in the industry.

There are specialist modelling departments in all the large accounting firms. Lots of accountants in industry do similar work.

Thanks very much. Which would partake in more financial modelling. A finance analyst in industry or an associate at a big 4 firm

An associate in a big 4 firm if they work in the financial modelling dept - if not they probably never do any at all. Most financial analysts in business would do a fair amount.

What would the pros and cons be of working in industry in the financial analyst role Vs working as a financial modeller within a big 4 firm

Well - a financial modeller role is probably more specialist so you get to build specialist skills. Big 4 and other large accounting firms are good for learning a lot quickly and getting experience of a range of companies and industries. They do, however, get their pound of fresh. A lot of people start in accounting firms then move to industry.

Why not apply to both and see how you get on and what appeals?
