It is illegal to record stuff from your television full stop. At least it was, I dunno if they changed the law or not.
Definitely illegal to upload stuff onto the internet you've recorded.
Reply 8
Yes it is. But everybody does it so really it's meaningless.

how come mp3s were invented then and allowed to be used

It's how you use it that's illegal. Doesn't stop people from using it wrongly.
It's illegual. I think that if you do it, your video will be deleted later on.

In theory you are allowed to record something watch it once but if you want to keep it you are required to get the copyright owners permission. This was the rules for VHS so I am guessing the same rules apply to Sky+ etc.

In reality there is no way of enforcing the rule.

RE: Op's question. Distributing copyright material without it's owners permission is illegal.

we learned about it in media studies a couple of years ago and its not illegal to record off tv but your only supposed to keep it for something like 3 months or it then becomes illegal, though no one really bothers about it and they may have changed the law by now.

thank you for ur response
That depends on what you're doing. If you clearly state who the copyright belongs to and you are within what can be defined as Fair Use (a parody, a review, a remix or something similar are some examples of permitted use) but if it's a simple copy then no.

I'm afraid that's complete librarian poop. You are allowed to make a single, personal copy of a television or radio broadcast you are legally permitted to view for personal use (for example you must own a TV licence and pay for a Sky subscription to record something from satellite tv).

Should you duplicate, distribute, rent or make available for download this recording, however, you're in trouble...
