Hey did people do the social TSR meet up in the end?
Original post by Doughnuts!!
You are, in essence, my TSR brotha from anotha mother! :awesome:
We're freakishly alike...sucks that we didn't get to meet!

Well assuming no Cambridge offer - a relatively safe assumption - and assuming I get an offer from UCL or LSE - a wholly unsafe assumption - I'll be going to London, and will be able to visit you in Cam :h:

I'm sorry I missed it too :frown: I blame the **** rail network.

Give us a vague idea of what it said. I'm intrigued now...
My eyes kept getting drawn towards my interviewer's notes in the general interview but they were quite far from me. Would have been interesting to see what he was writing about me.

Haha well basically he asked me if I'd read any work of a particulary realllly famous author and I said no not really, I've vaguely skimmed x-book and know a few scenes from y-play and he wrote on his piece of paper "No -Insert Author-"

six of us met on the seventh

Like I said, I have no idea how the interviews went, plus economics, like law I suppose, is ridiculously stupidly competitive. I think the best thing to do would be to put Cambridge to the back of my mind, but that is probably going to be impossible .

But it's you[I/]. Seriously, if you don't get an offer in January I'll be amazed at the insanity of the admissions tutor at Christ's.

That's assuming that I'll get into Cam! :p: The most realistic situation is that I'll visit you in UCL/LSE when I come occasionaly home at weekends from Warwick.

:eek3:
That would deflate my confidence so much!

Don't tell me that it was Shakespeare though...

Aw that's great! Sorry I wish I could've come but I left on the sixth...actually I found the experience rather isolating...I really wanted to socialise and meet tons of people but everyone seemed to be hermetically sealed in their rooms :frown: So i chatted to the under grads instead

This is so true, when I was waiting for my interview, the room that I was waiting in was so tense, and one of the other applicants was like to me this room so tense! I thought that people should have tried to lighten up a tiny bit, I find that staying calm makes you perform better

Yeah totally! Did everyone seem nervous/anxious? I think people feed off each other's energy in that way- that's why i hung round with the chatty/sociable people i really feel it put me at ease

This, although I was only there for the day, I found the interview waiting room really insular. :frown:

Really? It was the complete opposite at Catz. After my interview was done I went into the waiting room with another Law applicant and people (mainly current students) were laughing and joking, making there be a quite a jovial mood.

Maybe Catz really is the "friendly college". :awesome:

I gave both my interviewer electric shocks when I shook their hands

That happens to me ALL of the time! My sister said that that will happen to me at the interviews! We at least they will remember you!
I just want to say I hope that everyone here has an offer because they're so nice and I think everyone deserves one! And if I get rejected, I'd like to think that it went to somebody who's just as nice as everyone here!

I've had the same experience at Caius. The people are just very welcoming and friendly. When I came back from an interview and told another interviewee about it others listened and were interested and what can I say they were just really nice. They seemed to care, but also made jokes and laughed.

Indeed. The TSR people have become a little (or should I rather say huge?) family for me and in each case, I can be sure offers are made to decent, friendly people.

:h: I wasn't even going to apply to Cambridge actually, sort of decided not to over the summer and then the people on this thread convinced me to go for it ^^

Haha, don't worry, I do it all the time, don't look at people's sigs!

Congratulations on your Bristol offer by the way! I live in Bristol and it's a lovely place  I would have applied to Bristol myself if I didn't live here! That and the fact the maths building is really ugly :p:

:yep: Based on the people here, I'd say that the students at Cambridge definitely are not snobs! Although maybe those who are can't bear to interact with us :p:

The problem is people think you're 'posh' if you can string a sentence together in good English sadly, thus Oxbridge students are snobby posh rah-rah types... or so they say

I totally know what you mean!
In the JCR in Robinson, barely anyone spoke apart from the undergraduates while I was there. The only time I heard anyone speaking were two people who seemed to know each other talking about paracetamol. :s-smilie: I assumed they were applying for medicine.
Another applicant for Robinson on here, who was there the day before, said differently though. Maybe I was just part of the bad batch. :p:

The undergraduates there were really nice though! The girl who took me to my interview was really cool. Maybe I even saw Nuodai and didn't know it was him...

How was your interview then, fellow maths applicant? I'm still not sure if I regret choosing Robinson over Emmanuel - it's a bit further from the centre than I realised, and people really aren't joking when they talk about 'red bricks'... But I felt so much more relaxed there than I did at Clare last year... Even the porters were fantastic.

Sorry if you've posted a blow by blow account of your interview previously in the thread or something - I decided long ago that there are far too many posters in this thread to make it possible for me to keep up!

I hope you're feeling confident!
If anyone cares, I'm going on holiday - leaving for the airport in an hour. So won't get to speak to any of you for ten days or so.
I'm going diving in egypt, because i'm too hard to let sharks put me off.

My interview is slowly approaching. . .Monday! Getting pretty anxious now :/

This might sound stupid but I'm taking it you wait outside the room your being interviewed in and they call for you as opposed to you just knocking and going in?

Another thing, what's smart casual? I was thinking of a pair of dark blue jeans, a jumper/shirt, shoes and a jacket. Too casual??

I think it depends on the college, but usually there will be someone in the room being interviewed before you so when they come out, either your interviewer will call you straight in or you just wait for them to come and get you. They'll probably wait a minute or two as they scribble down some notes on the previous applicant and/or have a flip through your application (if only to see your first name :p:).

And I went in dark blue jeans, a shirt, and dark blue trainers. :p:
Most people, surprisingly, were in suits. More than I saw at Clare last year.

Same :lolwut:

Me too. It was confusing though because it seemed so out of place - not for the situation, but for the person! Like they'd gotten dressed, and thought, hang on, I'll take off these smart trousers and put some trackies on. :p:

I tell you what really got to me though; at one point I could hear one of the Four Seasons by Vivaldi coming through earphones. I won't say I've never had that on my iPod, but it was just so surreal to me at the time. :p:

It's just one of those things that are used against you when you try to explain how Cambridge (or Oxford, or any top uni) aren't just for posh upper class snobs. :p:

And arguing that 'classical' music isn't just for posh upper class snobs is another thing entirely...
