Haha - I randomly signed in and saw that it was open. Butt waittt? I swear it was only open to unconditional offer holders?

Hope we get our first choices - if it's open to everyone, I suggest people get a move on and get their applications in!

LOL same man! Didn't waste anytime applying!! Naa can't be. It let me submit my app and I'm a conditional offer holder. LOL definitely man. Everyone needs to start applying! What was your first choice btw?

This makes me pretty happy - so thanks man.

I decided to go for Nixon Court in the end. Purely based on me asking a few of the medics I know in the older years. They basically all agreed that living in Oadby for the 1st year would take it's toll because I'd have to travel every morning for lectures as apparently monday-friday is 9:00am starts (except for Wednesday which is 8.30) :lolwut:

My only issue is socialising - I do intend to make a big effort with societies/meeting new people, but will not living in Oadby really hurt me socially?

Is that shiny new Nixon?

Yeah, I wouldn't fancy that timetable to be honest.

It would for pretty much anyone else but you get to play the joker of being a medic, who to be honest mainly hang around with other medics anyway (this isn't just a Leicester thing, my girlfriend does medicine in Birmingham and it's the same).

You will do mainly medic oriented things. There's loads of LUSUMA societies (if you're a fan of chinos and tweed join medics rugby) doing sports and more specific medical stuff (Surgery, Sexual Health etc etc.) and also the wider uni societies to get involved with (if you're into music; sport at a higher, less tweedy if equally be-chinoed, level; drama etc.). Also, you'll get to know loads of medics in Oadby so can go and visit regularly enough to get the Oadby experience (well mainly JoFo, it is medics after all ). Basically, it won't harm your social life that much. Only possible occasion might be during normal (ie. not Introweek) Freshers' when a lot of bar crawls, including the massive one on the second monday, are in halls groups, but just buy a t-shirt for the halls of one of your mates and go on it with them.

Not really sure which one it is to be honest - Nixon's locality sold it to me. I just didn't fancy that commute every morning. I have heard that medics tend to stay with medics (due to work/study commitments) but I fully intend to make non medic friends (I think i'd go pretty mad otherwise ahah)

I've heard a lot about LUSUMA (which I intend to get involved with) - their societies seem pretty interesting, but again I don't just want to isolate myself with the medics like I hear some tend to do. There was only 1 real negative for me - the new sports complex will be at Oadby right? But I guess travelling to the gym every day will be a lot more relaxed than commuting to lectures in the morning. I actually heard people tend to mug off medics quite a bit and that they're sorta isolated because everyone thinks they're stuck up - that can't be true can it?

Yeah, no getting away from it come 4th and 5th (6th maybe) so may as well try and get out there whilst the rest of us are still around!

New sports complex is at Oadby but the unis just bought a private gym just next to campus which you can join which has weights room ,cardio room, 25m pool, sauna etc. so you probably won't use Oadby: http://www2.le.ac.uk/staff/announcements/main-campus-sports-facilities

Not particularly, we just don't see them that much as they're in med school for such long hours and then after 2nd year you're on placement so basically work a normal day.

Having seen it from both sides (when I visit my girlfriend, she lives with all medics) I think it's as much being forced together in a high pressured environment for long hours (though Leicester don't do quite the hours Birmingham do), that you don't have a normal first year as yours counts the same as the others and the knowledge that you will need to live with just medics post third year. Yes more medics are privately educated, might have 10 A*'s at GCSE and 4 A*s at A level which others won't etc. but unless you go around with your A level grades tattooed on your biceps and a stethoscope round your neck even though you're a first year, no one will think you're stuck up.

Saying that make sure you milk the sympathy for your long hours and hard work in first year. After that your mates will be working just as hard and won't be as forgiving when you have a guaranteed, very well paid and incredibly rewarding job at the end of it

Email your dept admissions or accommodation to check but I think your student number is just your UCAS number.

Tried my UCAS ID number just now and it doesn't work. I've emailed them straight away after reading all your replies. Got me worried!

If you got an offer letter/email - should have it on that!

I've checked all letters received in the post and all emails and I can't find anything with an ID number :frown: I've emailed them. What specific email/letter did you find yours on may I ask?

Haha yeah I can imagine it's pretty exciting after all the hassle of med school applications! Also, I spose for you given the amount of time you'll be there (and that medics rarely fall far from the university nest for F1/F2, then ST1, ST2 etc. and before you know it you're a consultant with a wife, 2 kids and a house in the Leicstershire countryside :P) it'll be pretty exciting seeing the city that's going to be your home for some time!

It was on the offer letter I got through the post - it's not a problem if you can't find it. Just send admissions an email, state your UCAS ID and they'll send your student ID.

Haha - that was pretty funny. At the moment I'm hoping to come back to London post graduating, but I know how quickly things change. Your future scenario sounds pretty epic though aha. What are your plans after you graduate?

Yeah, apparently London is the most competitive ( apparently because intercalation's close to obligatory because so many London med schools do automatic 6 years plus all the Oxbridge grads who do their clinical years there), I am just relaying information here so could be wrong. But as you say there's no way of knowing what you'll want come 5 or 6 years time.

As an arts graduate I'm planning to find a job centre in a nice picturesque location to give me something nice to look at whilst I queue on a Monday. No, I'm applying for law equivalent of FY1 and the public sector grad schemes, so pretty standard stuff.

Just applied now, everything's sorted which is good
Quick accomdation question here, what is the difference between "Premium ensuite room" and "Premium PLUS ensuite room"?

One's JoFo Pavilions (the ones with massive bathroom, wood cladding, that Premier Inn feel, almost definitely saw them on Open Day). Premium is recently renovated but with only a pod bathroom and probably not as big as the JoFo rooms.

So the "plus" ones that are more expensive are obvs the better ones? They are both obviously situated in the same blocks though I assume? Just a smaller layout inside?

No, the premium (self catered only) ensuites at JoFo are in the Coppice, a converted and extended old house which was renovated when they built the Pavilions nearer to the cross roads. This block is nearly all gap year students normally (in my year there was apparently one student fresh from school in there). Though I don't know whether this would be the same this year, due to the fees I imagine not many of the current Fresher year group did gap years.
