Well...you're right, the NHS bursary is available from years 2-4, and tuition fee and maintenance loans are available from years 1-4.
You won't be rolling in cash, but it's enough to get by on for the most part. Though lots of GEP medics worked prior to starting medicine, so have savings, etc. A lot of people also get help from their parents.
