Graduate entry medicine funding

Hello, I am a graduate nurse with another previous degree. If I were to apply for GEM it would be my 3rd degree. What funding is available to me?

Hi there,

I am in a similar situation GEM would be my third degree. From what I am aware from SFE the four year graduate entry Medicine would be a better route for those of us that are in this situation. When I called SFE they mentioned that anyone with an already completed degree would not receive funding for tuition fees if they were to embark on the 5 year undergraduate medicine course. You would receive maintenance loans but would have to self-fund £37,000 for the tuition fees and that the NHS would cover the cost of your fifth year tuition.

In contrast, if you were to opt for the four year graduate entry medicine courses you would only have to self-fund £3,465 of tuition in the first year and the remainder is covered by SFE. In years 2 - 4 the NHS and SFE cover the cost of your remaining tuition fees and you would receive maintenance loans from SFE.

The difficulty is that many of the GEM courses have fewer numbers of spaces than the typical undergraduate medicine places and are therefore way more competitive. The four year courses are also much more intense due to the nature of the study so it may be difficult to sustain part-time work on the side if that is something you were looking at doing.
