Which is the best places to go for a pre-degree art and design foundation diploma?

Hi i'm studying fine art at a level and hope to receive A/A* by A2 and I would like to go on to study illustration at university in the hope of becoming a concept artist. I've been looking around and found some great illustration courses and even though they say it's not required I think it's be smart to do a foundation course to broaden up my pallet. Therefore I was wondering where would be the key places to do a foundation course, I'd prefer somewhere in the south of the UK however all suggestions are welcome! Thank you

Loughborough is one of the best art foundation courses in the UK. I have also been looking at UAL, Kingston and Oxford Brookes.

Are there any particular areas you want to specialise in or experiment with?

Hi GRANA,

I'm currently a student at Ravensbourne but before I started by BA in Graphic Design I did a Foundation Diploma here as well. My foundation year was amazing because I got to try and experiment with different things and disciplines before I had to choose a pathway. Doing it in a university setting also helped me network with BA and PG students to wider my skill set with their help. It's a great year to really become independent. That's one of the reasons I would recommend looking into Ravensbourne because we are in a open space building so all the students from Foundation to Bachelors to Postgrad are in the same place learning. The open space plan really allows for a free space for all students to be collaborative and socialise with people they might not have known otherwise. You will have opportunities to work on competitions with other courses from different levels and being a part of Ravensbourne will also allow you to join our RaveAgency to help you find work in your field before even starting your BA.

I would recommend coming to one of our open days to get a taste of what the open space feels like as well as meeting the tutors and students to talk about the course. You will also be able to look at what the students are working on and get help with Portfolio. We are located in North Greenwich, London if you are able to come.

I hope this has helped and if you have any questions please feel free to ask.

I'm at Newcastle College currently, its the UAL accredited course so they have progression links with certain unis and lower offers in some cases. It's not just Newcastle that do this course, I think there are around 7 in the country so I'd definitely look into doing one of them if you can research!!

sorry for the late reply!

Well ive now chosen not to do the foundation and go straight into the visual communication course at canterbury.
Would not doing the foundation put me at a significant disadvantage?
Ive got an A* in my GCSE art as well as a predicted A Level grade of A*.

That's something worth discussing with canterbury when you have your interview/portfolio review. If they think you're ready and your 100% happy that vis com is the course for you then you're golden.

The foundation can fill all sorts of gaps - gaps in your portfolio, gaps in your experiences with different media, gaps in your confidence about which creative course is for you....if you don't think you've got gaps and the university think you're ready then it isn't needed.

What are the other unis that have this type of course? I'm looking everywhere online but there's not much info on foundation art courses.

Hi @Xmimix

You might find this thread useful - https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=5017684

It's about a year old now so worth checking on the individual university websites, but it might be a good starting point for you!

We offer the art and design foundation diploma here at Bucks - let me know if you'd like any info on our course.

Thanks

Laura

Hi,

Wrexham Glyndwr University offer foundation years for some of their art courses, such as Applied Arts, Fine Art, Animation, Graphic Design and Game Art. You can find out more about the courses offered here: https://www.glyndwr.ac.uk/en/Undergraduatecourses/

A foundation year is great if you don't meet the standard entry requirements for the 3 year degree or if you've been out of education for a while or are looking for a new challenge by embarking on a new career path.

I know many students who started on a foundation year and they felt it really benefited them and increased their confidence. We have more information here if it is of interest to you: https://www.glyndwr.ac.uk/en/Undergraduatecourses/Foundationyear/

Hope it helps and let me know if there is anything else you need to know and I'll see if I can help!
