Hi guys, does anyone know what Sciennes is like in terms of distance to things?

Shops, George Sq and clubs mainly because 1. I like my heels and 2. I dont want to be getting lost,

I just don't know where the main clubs are for the students, pls help x

Hi, I currently live 2 minutes for Sciennces.

Shops: You'll have 2 Sainsbury's Locals just around the corner, for slightly bigger supermarkets you have Lidls and Tesco Metro which is about a 10 minute walk. There's also a huge Sainsbury's at Cameron Toll, which is a 25-30 minute walk away.

George Sq: I'd say you'll be about 5-10 minutes from the Library, and 10-15 minutes away from Bristo Square, basically you'll be extremely close to uni.

Bars and Clubs: There are plenty of bars nearby, so if you want a quiet drink with mates then you have plenty of options. Your nearest clubs will be on Cowgate, which is about a 15-20 minute walk if you know the right way. The clubs here include Hive, Cab Vol, Sneaky Petes and also Banshee and Opium of you're looking for something more alternative.

Anyone know anything about Warrender Park Road/Crescent? I'm from Edinburgh so I do know it's a bit further across the Meadows but I've got a bike so that doesn't really bother me. Just wondering about atmosphere etc. I've firmed an unconditional for primary education with history so I'll be split between George Square and Moray House.

Thanks!
Tried to apply for accommodation but it wouldn't let me apply for catered accommodation and then self catered accommodation as a reserve. anyone else had this problem ? can you only apply for either catered/ self catered and not both?

I'm studying Chemistry this September too. I was in Edinburgh this morning to check how far the walking distances actually were i.e for the Abbeyhill accommodation google maps said it would be half an hour to George Square but it only took 20 minutes and that was casual speed. Since that's where the lectures/shuttle buses to Kings Buildings are anyway, I think a 20 minute walk wasn't too bad at all.

Also, I too would prefer to be able to easily socialise and given that Abbeyhill looks further out, I was hesitant. Yet, the area was close enough to the centre to still be social, while at the same time the actual location of those halls was relatively quiet, meaning that it wouldn't be too noisy during the night etc.

Good luck with wherever you decide. I'm sure we'll end up crossing paths after September anyway

Ah cool! Maybe i'll see you in September ! 20 minutes is actually not too bad as long as it's not raining
I decided to go for Kincards court, I liked the look of the common room and stuff and I don't mind noise so I just went for my gut feeling
Good luck for your exams !

I dont know if anyone knows the answer to this but how do they allocate rooms? I've been told by a number of people that it isn't done on a first come first served basis so i dont understand how else they can do it fairly?? and to take into consideration people's choices? On the email it said they won't process them until may time but it's just all confusing.... Thanks x

I believe, this coming from what I gathered when I talked to Edinburgh accommodation team, is that they portion so many percentages of the room at a time. The example she gave me is that if 40% of their offers are unconditional they'll portion of 40% of each room type, so 40% pollock halls etc... And then they'll do it again for other percentages and so forth. And I believe they try to match roommates and stuff based on compatibility e.g. A-level/highers choices and chosen course, or something like that. The actual deadline isn't till 16th august as well, so it could be a long wait I suppose.... Again, this is all that I gathered from when I talked to her, it could be completely wrong, but I hope it kinda helped

not 100% sure but think you can only apply for either catered for self catered! because usually people either love catered or hate it i guess so dont usually tend to go for one of each
I have just applied for Blackfriars Street, Deaconess and Mansion Fountainbridge.

I have received a confirmation email but under myAccommodation on MyEd it says 'sorry - no information has been found for your record'. I just wanted to check if this is normal just in case I've done something wrong haha[h="3"]

Perfectly ordinary, if past years are anything to go by.

Same tenancy as every other Edinburgh accommidation, so the 1st Saturday of Freshers' till the end of May
I stayed at Beaverbank in first year, I would not recommend it.
