LPC electives

Hi all

I have recently started the LPC and am coming up to the time I have to select my electives.

The ones I am considering are Family, PI/CN and Commercial.

I did not complete a commercial law module at undergrad and have chosen this to try and keep my options broad.

However, ideally I would like to train with firms like Bevan Brittan or Irwin Mitchell specialisiing in clinical work. I have paralegal experience in healthcare law also.

I was looking for some advice from people who have completed the LPC who may have some advice on my choices and whether they suit what I ultimately want to do and whether they 'go together'. I have tried to contact my careers service but they have no appointments for another two weeks, after the electives need to be chosen.

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks
they seem to make sense for what you want to do, after all, it is the PI/CN one you want - I have never really been that clear about this myself, but presumably the firms which specify which electives you should do, before you undertake the LPC because they are paying for the LPC as you have a TC with them, I had always thought that these firms want you to do their electives at their provider etc etc - so if this isn't you, then you are probably going for firms which DON'T specify electives - this is a long way of saying, check out what electives firms you like want!

In my experience, the ones that pay specify and the ones that don't, can't specify and tend to say 'do what you want' - the bit I am not sure about is, what about the ones that specify, what do they do with applicants who already have the LPC? I had always figured that makes you less attractive to them - I don't know.

I do read on firm's sites that they sometimes say a commercial elective is useful. In my experience, where the electives might be more relevant is if you don't get a TC and end up paralegalling - then it is more likely you will be in one of the areas of law you have picked as an electives, because paralegal recruiters DO specify which elective they want you to have done often - and to be honest, it is going to help a lot!!

I also would say, do the electives you want to do, you seem to have judged them well to me. Go talk to your form tutor or even the head of the LPC about it!! Remember, you are their client!

If it helps, IM asks their future trainees on the personal legal services stream to pick three from PI/CN, Family, Insurance and Private Client.

However, I don't think your choices would get taken into account if you've already done them. Personally though, I think choosing electives like Family and PI alongside Commercial looks like you don't actually have a clue what you want to do.
