It depends more on what sort of things you are looking for in terms of accommodation and people.
Derwent is one of the colleges on the main campus, known for being social and having a lot of parties.
Generally speaking the accommodation is not as nice as some of the other colleges (although this does mean that it is cheaper). I'm not aware of any catered Derwent accommodation (although please don't quote me on that). It also depends on what you are studying, as for a few courses you will spend all/most of your time on the other campus (walking takes ~15 mins, or 5 mins with bus).
Edit: apparently half of Derwent gets catered accommodation
Edit: Derwent also has some shared bedrooms if that's your sort of thing

I'm guessing many people have applied already. Will I be late if I apply tomorrow hoping to get Derwent as my first choice?

If you put all of derwent in all your choices you can't not be in derwent.
Derwent is high demand but i think they consider all applications at the same time.

Hi there,

I graduated from the University of York in 2022, and I was part of Derwent College (so in my opinion it's the best one, though maybe I'm biased 😂).

Some quick facts first:

Derwent is one of the oldest colleges at York

It's based on Campus West (the original site for the University)

It's right next to the lake, which makes it ideal for having a peaceful stroll if you need some space to wind-down after a day of studying

It's about 5 min walk from the Library, 2 min walk from a bus stop to get into town and a 2 min walk from the Spring Lane Building, one of our main teaching spaces.

It offers catered accommodation and a mix of ensuite and shared bathroom rooms

It has 2 student run bars (Courtyard and D-bar)

I lived in Derwent between 2018 and 2019, so my experience is a few years ago now. I found that Derwent was a lively college, there was always something to do, and for me it was ideally placed for my classes as my course was based on Campus West. I hugely enjoyed my experience living on campus in Derwent College, and would definitely recommend it as an option. However, each college will offer activities, pastoral support and a community within the University, so whichever one you live in, I'm sure you'll have a good time!

I hope this helps - Hannah 🙂
