Hello, I thought I would start this post for anyone applying to Edinburgh this year and just to talk about general things to do with it, like what course you are applying for,
    portfolio advice, accommodation etc.

I am a Scottish student applying for the painting and illustration course to start in the second year and I am currently doing my HND art course.

    Useful links:

http://www.studentartguide.com/artic...-or-university (in general studentartguide is a really useful website I find)

Are you applying elsewhere? I will probably be applying to Glasgow as well, though I am now considering illustration instead of intermedia, though it still seems an interesting course, it is just the performance part I am unsure of.

Hi there! I'm applying for the illustration course (an EU applicant here)
Btw does anybody know what they exactly mean by these "influence/context images" which are required in the portfolio? Though there is a short explanation on UoE website it still seems a bit unclear to me

Hi there, I believe this is the explanation you are referring to? :

    Influence / Context Images
The images demonstrating your influences may be images of work or objects which have inspired or influenced your work e.g.
    • people working in the same medium or for the same audience, now or in the past
    • people interested in the same subject or theme, now or in the past
    • natural or man-made phenomena, objects, places, events which have inspired or provoked a response

Basically it saying which artists (present or past) have influenced your artwork, how they have inspired you. For example maybe Frida Kahlo influenced you to have a more surreal, unusual aspect to your artwork.
Also how do your chosen artists connect to your chosen theme. Example, if you picked ballet then it is likely you chose Degas as an artist, so you would have explored his artwork, and taken influence.
Just pick two or three artists who have the most impact on your artwork and take pictures of the sketchbook pages you completed on them for the portfolio.

The last point is about what has influenced your work other then the artists. For example if you chose a theme based on city life then you would have to have lived in or had been to a city a lot to get photos, and a better understanding of life in a city. Also it includes research through books or the internet or anything else that helped your research on the theme. So for this you would take pictures of your research relating to this area of work you completed for the portfolio.

This is my take on what is being asked and hopefully it has helped you understand what you need to know.

That is good hear it helped! I would also add that to put more emphasis on the research side of your theme rather than the artists, so have say three images relating to the research and two images about the artists, but again that is my opinion on it.

My UCAS is going alright, just need to fill out the personal statement and get references, will send it in the next few weeks, as we have a deadline for references at our college in mid December. We have until the end of January for portfolio so I will send that off about a week before the deadline.

Hi I was unable to go to the open day, but I have been to Edinburgh several times and I feel the city suits me best for going to, so I hope I am offered a place there too! I am going to send my UCAS off this week sometime, and I know, putting the portfolio together is going to be nerve wracking, deciding how to organize the work and uploading it all as well!

Hi, I would advise you to thoroughly look over your artwork and decide what ideas, style and techniques you use within your artwork, to see what specialism suits you best. How many years are you willing to study for, from my memory fine art is five instead of three or four, so take that into consideration. Also fine art is not as specialised I believe, until the second year? Just ask from advice from your teachers/ tutors and see what they think you should choose, look on the website, but is up to you in the end, what subject you will enjoy and excel in. Also depending on how many choices you have left for UCAS you could pick two of them if it is that hard to choose. Hope this helped

I know, I just sent mine off today for illustration and painting, it was stressing me out putting the portfolio together, but now it is time to wait and see what happens!
