Iron in tapes - OCR Salters Investigation

Hello,

I am currently planning my A2 individual investigation for OCR Salters and I wanted to do the iron in a tape investigation in which you find out the content of iron in a set amount of magnetic tape.

I have found out so far these tapes are made of polyester which the iron on the surface, therefore I thought if I hydrolysed the polyester with HCl the iron would then go into the solution, forming iron chloride.

I was then going to use colorimetry and a titration to determine the amount of iron. However, to do these do I need to isolate the iron chloride from the mixture formed from hydrolysis, and if so what method do I use to do this?
Nice topic.

If you intend to use spectroscopy (colorimetry) then you don't need to separate the iron from the solution provided that there are no interfering ions present. This can easily be demonstrated using some prepared solutions.

Likewise with titration.
