Hehe The fuller Guardian report indicates the bandwagon-jumping curator's regressive liberal and new puritan tendencies rather more fully:

https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2018/jan/31/manchester-art-gallery-removes-waterhouse-naked-nymphs-painting-prompt-conversation

The move appears to have backfired on her, according to The Times:

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/time-s-up-for-manchester-art-gallery-s-nymphs-bathing-in-the-buff-william-waterhouse-hylas-and-the-nymphs-v9sv9vs67

Almost all responses on Twitter treated the idea with contempt. Stig Abell, editor of The Times Literary Supplement, wrote: “This is fine, as long as the conversation begins, ‘please put the painting back up and stop being so silly’.”

Anna Maria Barry, a 19th century historian and researcher for the Royal College of Music Museum, wrote: “This is ********[male bovine excrement]. Not only ridiculous and completely ahistorical, but actually borderline offensive to conflate this cheap publicity stunt with important #MeToo debates.”

Kathryn Ecclestone, the visiting professor of education at the University of Sheffield, wrote: “Defining this an ‘artistic act’ doesn’t disguise its authoritarian moralising as part of a rapidly spreading censorship championed by an increasingly puritanical, hectoring and intolerant feminism. It’s dangerous and a long way from the feminism I grew up with.”

One user noted that Henrietta Rae, a late Victorian artist whose work is in the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, depicted the same scene with similar nudity.

The Bear is performing wonders to raise the profile of nineteenth century classically-themed art with the masses.

What's the problem? It's just a painting.

Is the whole world too uncomfortable with this art that they find it offensive.
