AS Level Maths Simeltaneous equations

Getting nowhere with this unfortunately. Tried making the equations equal to eachother but that didn't work out.

x - 2y = 1
3xy - y^2 = 8

Rearrange the first one to get x = 1 + 2y
Then substitute that into the second equation

i.e. 3*(1+2y)*y - y^2 = 8

Solve that for y then substitute your values of y back into x = 1 + 2y
