You don't need it, they are in a public place.
Excellent. As the Association of Head Teachers said:

“Society makes leaps forward when people are prepared to take action. Schools encourage students to develop a wider understanding of the world around them. A day of activity like this could be an important and valuable life experience."

And it could hardly be on a more important subject.
Why do people actually bother protesting? It literally makes no difference, signing petitions make no difference.
Doubt it will make much difference but it's nice to see children getting experiences like this and being somewhat proactive.
This... isn't smart.

Look, I can understand that these kids do not want to live in a world where the climate is ****ed, right, I don't either but for a start, what exactly is it that they want the UK government to do to stop climate change as a whole? The UK government doesn't have nearly as much global negotiating power as people would like to think it does; it's a weak organisation in comparison to, say, China, Russia, US, maybe Japan? Maybe certain Middle Eastern countries, I dunno. Also, the way they go about it makes it seem as if this climate change issue is one that the government can magically solve with little effort, as with almost every other issue plaguing society (or at least the part that is affected).

Also, they do realise that the conventional method of consumption of energy and resources which they voluntarily use, as well as their radio-based telecommunications via their Desktop, Laptop and Mobile computers are contributors to this problem, right? (see sound pollution, and then replace sound with electromagnetic radiation emitted from different sources simultaneously at radio frequencies in a localised region of space, and then think about how that can actually cause damage to the environment within that space). It ain't all fossil fuels and nothing else, climate change is a complex problem that literally regressing back to the years long before the early 1900s would require to solve the issue.

Actually, even then that wouldn't solve the problem.

They need to specify a solution to the problem, or go find designers and engineers who they will pay to do so. Plus, these kids are going out of their way to skip school when this could have been done on the weekend, as now their own teachers will require to give them the "catch-up" treatment, when their time could have gone to something more useful, such as teaching them new things rather than the things they should have been taught on the day of their protest.
Wish they did this in my school so I can bunk
Easy to criticise - they haven't come up with a complete solution, they are benefiting from the system they criticise, nothing will change....And that's exactly the response the oil billionaires, the illegal loggers, the road and car lobbies want to see. "Shut up and let us make more money."

No single action is going to solve the problems we are facing. But better to try, however flawed that try is, than to sit by and sneer while the planet burns.
why are so many adults arguing "ohh they need an education if they care so much about climate change"????

missing one day of school changes nothing. my attendance is 100% despite getting the flu. I missed nothing today at school haven't learned anything new when i could've been there it seemed great.

although my argument is that protesting is too idealistic and this wont change anything. when i shared it originally i imagined a low turnout as no one knew what it was about but it seemed quite high. strict parents wont let me skip school even when im at my worst as well otherwise it would've been nice. better than sitting at home posting about how much i want to make a difference
why is the schoolboy wearing a mask ?

does he have asthma or something ?

If nothing else I agree with it purely due to the slew of stuffy, anger it's causing in some people "They should be in school! harrumph!" :grumble:

I hope the children who did not agree with protest did not feel forced to join in by the other children at their school.

It is funny the way some people in media are getting upset because they are missing 3 hours of school.

Never too young to learn the futility of walking around waving banners...

Don't really see the point but I'd have done it when I was at school (for the time off) and it doesn't affect my life, so fair play to them.
Oh look, a bunch of kids are protesting. I guess we should start trying to mitigate our carbon emissions now. It's not like the UK is already doing that significantly (and on track to meet its targets)...

I honesty don't know what this accomplishes beyond useless virtue signalling (and a day off). What is it going to prompt anyone to do that isn't already being done?

Go back to school.
I don't understand why some people are saying to go back to school. Young people protesting for a genuinely important cause will never be a waste of time. This one protest is not going to fix global warming, but it's at least going to draw attention to the true nature of how large it really is. It's a massive problem. Plus, school is for learning, and preparation for the adult world. These kids are clearly ready for it.

Not only that people have been complaining about the students trampling on a lawn outside westminister

Are you serious? If taking a day off (a Friday with rather nice weather of course ) and walking around with a Socialist Worker banner is preparation for life after school, then I don’t have high expectations.

That’s not the point. They clearly give a sh**. They want to make change. Not all of them, obviously some will just have participated to ditch school. The point is these young people are actively going out and drawing attention to a huge problem that many adults and politicians refuse to even admit. Personally for me, it seems they’re setting the bar higher.
