Hi Maria,
I am in my final year on the
Management course at the Uni of Bath, but this sounds exactly like my dilemma when I was applying! From what you have said about variety and working in an office, it sounds like you would be very suited to a Business Management degree!
To answer your question simply –
yes, a Business Management degree is worth it!Content is varied…In first year, we were introduced to all the core areas of business e.g. marketing, accounting, finance, HR, operations, business analytics, economics, international business etc. This meant I never got bored of doing one thing and helped me realise what interested me most (as I had never studied Business before).
Then in second and final year, you can tailor your course more so that your degree becomes a bit more specialised – I mostly take marketing modules as this is what I enjoy most, and I did my placement in this field which meant it became really relevant (I’ll talk about the placement later on).
You learn practical and soft skills (relevant in any job) …The assessments are often practical and relevant to working in an office (although we do still do exams on the course). You will likely be asked to present and work on group projects which is more like real life. In this sense, the course will never be irrelevant because you can apply these skills to any career!
Placement year…Most Management students at Bath do a
placement year. It is in our third year so by this time you have studied the course for 2 years and have a better idea of what you might like to do as a job. The 4 main benefits of doing a placement in my experience were:
1. You have a year of experience before you even graduate
2. You are still at the university so can get support with CVs, cover letters, interview technique etc. (I had 1:1 help with all of this)
3. It helps you confirm your interest or helps you realise that career is not for you before you are too committed – it can be an experiment year!
4. You have access to lots of students who have already done placements at well-known companies that you can get advice from
You can have a look here at
where Management students go on placement, but I would really recommend looking at courses which include a year in industry.
Hope this helps, if you have any more questions, just quote me!
