In need of advice

Hi everyone, I am in need of advice. Eventually in my life I want to be a commercial pilot and I have managed to save up enough money for a private pilots license. I have two options for what I can do right now. 1 - Join the RAF at 16 (current age) as a cyberspace communications specialist and obtain my PPL at a subsidised cost through the RAF flying clubs and build my hours up there. I have always liked the idea of being in the RAF, I did my work experience there and loved it and liked the Cyberspace Communications role the most out of all of them. I also have had a few flight lessons and simulator sessions and loved them. So what I’m thinking of doing is joining the RAF and working until I’ve done the required post training years to save up enough to do a commercial pilots license modular route. Option 2 - I could go to college to do IT , DT and geography and get my PPL at a local flight school and work throughout college to pay for the night rating, keeping my skills up in a small plane and save toward paying for a ATPL distant learning course exams. Then get a job with no required training after college to save for the rest of the training which would cost around £35,000 - £45,000 excluding type rating cost. I don’t come from a family where they could pay to put me through flight training. I am also open to any suggestions anyone has and would really appreciate it.
Also my GCSE predicted grades from the last PPE before school closed are:
-Maths - 7 (A)
-English Language - 7 (A)
-English Literature - 6 (B)
-Physics - 7 (A)
-Biology - 7 (A)
-Chemistry - 6 (B)
-Geography - 8 (A*)
-Computer Science - 5 (C)
-Engineering - Distinction* (A*)
-French 3 (D/E)
Thank you to anyone who replies.

Well your clearly intelligent from your gcse grades and having a levels is always better than not having them and you could always join the raf in cyberspace communications after college. If you aren't going to uni then getting a job and saving up money for you to get your PPL is doable - i don't know how expensive it would be but most people in sixth form have jobs. Have you thought about becoming a pilot in the raf - you need to 18 and have a certain number of ucas points and be very physically fit but then you wouldn't have to pay for it. Even if you want to be a commercial pilot being a pilot in the raf for a certain number of years would give you the qualifications you want idk. Hope this helps

I'm in a similar situation to you (aspiring pilot and I don't have a wealthy family to fund me :frown:)

One thing I'd bear in mind is have something to fall back on if things go pear shaped e.g. like COVID-19. A degree or a handy trade are always good.

Happy landings

Your grades for what they're worth are good. Get your PPL, work and do your ATPL modular. The RAF worked back in the day however now you have to do 10 years mandatory. In the 10 years you could do your command upgrade and be way up a seniority list..for a peace of mind I'd just avoid them completely plus its all a faf of converting licence and you have to fly the heavies you cant fly jets and convert them..
