Sometimes I Just Can’t Think Straight

Practice makes a huge difference - you'll both find you make a lot fewer mistakes and that your brain gets better at distinguishing between "I need to focus really hard at doing these particular steps" and "I need to let my mind run over different options to decide what's best".

I remember in one of my further maths A-level exams just having a thirty second blank where no thinking was occurring. I think leaving the question and coming back at it later works very well for giving a 'fresh' approach to the question. Obviously that's not so feasible in an exam session, but the better you become at doing problems outside the exam, the better you'll be at doing them in the exam. Plus, the faster you get them done the more time you have to look over and check for mistakes.
