IBMS top up modules

Hi,
I have completed a non accredited Biomedical Science degree and currently am applying to become a HCPC registered scientist. I have had a degree assessment and have been informed that I need to do 8 top up modules!! I'm in the process of appealing two modules as I feel that they have been covered. If anyone has appealed what kind of information/ evidence did you provide? and was the appeal accepted?
Even if the appeal is accepted for two modules, that's quite a substantial number you would need to complete...they're also very expensive.

You may be better off aiming for the STP and becoming a clinical scientist if you want to work as a scientist within the NHS.

I have actually applied before, but didn’t get to the interview stage and have been told it’s extremely competitive, but I definitely will look into it again. Do you know how expensive the top up modules are? I haven’t found a lot online

I seem to recall UWE Bristol offering some and they were c. £2000 per module: https://www.uwe.ac.uk/courses/professional-development/biomedical-science-module-top-up
If you are still interested / have yet to submit your documentation - give this a read. The more a read about the IBMS, the more I understand it is not run for the benefit of anyone but the IBMS. Maybe get any lab job before spending on top-up, it took me 6 years of working as an MLA while pestering the manager to allow portfolio training. When you do top up, investigate University of Ulster. A colleague used them and recommended them because of their distance learning (pre covid).

As for clinical science training, I would say it is more competitive than biomedical science. There is even more competition for "grade B" jobs. Furthermore, as you specialise into molecular/immunology/tissue typing etc you are even further restricted on jobs. At least a generic BMS should be, within reason, capable of working across disciplines. I still do not know why clinical scientists exist for core lab disciplines, I think they are purely management trainees by another name.

There was a time when host laboratories received funding to host the STP trainee for 3 of the 4 years. The host institution was expected to pay for year 4. They did, but not for everyone. You then had trainees who had an incomplete qualification in a worse position than biomedical science grads looking for trainee positions.

You're right. I'm also currently working as an MLA and need to complete my top-ups plus my portfolio. But I just don't know what else I would want to do other than try progress. I got an offer from Aston University but still not sure what to do.
To be honest, 8 is not that unusual if you have a non-accredited degree. I've never seen anyone get less than 2.

But I would have a thought if it's definitely the role you want, because it's going to cost a lot of money and time to get to it. Are you currently working in an NHS laboratory?
