I feel like technology has taken over my life and I hate it.

Title says it all really. As much as I love technology, and my course (which is largely technology based as it's Computer Science), I honestly think I've let it go too far now. Recently I've noticed that the screen time on my phone has gone through the roof, and I am not proud of that whatsoever. I'm spending way more time on things like Instagram, TikTok and YouTube than before, and it's getting to the point where I'm beginning to procrastinate more because of it. There was a time the other day where I wanted to work, but just couldn't because I was so engrossed in my phone. And there is only one cause to this problem: me.

It's my fault that it's gotten to this point. I've tried SO hard to curb this issue, try focusing more on work etc, but to no avail. I feel like this is having a serious effect on me and also my university work, and if I don't try to fix the problem soon, it could be disastrous. I've deleted a couple of my social medias to try and help, and I may delete more if I feel the need. But right now, I have no idea what to do.

Buy a basic android phone with phone calls and text (for safety) but no apps etc and no social media. Give your burner number to only those close friends and family who love you. Turn everything else off when you finish your course for the day. Find out what it feels like to ditch everything (and the world does not end)

Try and engineer your own head space and peace. Try enrolling on a meditation course or tai chi to counter the woodpecker effect on the brain of tech or try going on retreat.

Put your phone colour on monochrome, find it in settings. Also disable all social media apps besides essential ones. I stopped using every form of social media besides whatsapp and discord a few years ago. Monochrome helped me stop watching yt shorts. The next point is key,go outside. Find a hobby. If you dont, then you will revert to your original status. Go gym, swimming, wall climbing, boxing, basketball. For me all of that costs £50 a month so its not a crazy amount of money. Another point js dont go on ur phone before u sleep and after you wake up. I promise you, if you do all of those steps you wont have your current problems. I used to watch anime and tv shows (4 years ago) since then I cant even watch anything without getting bored right away. It isnt easy to do this, but after the first 2 or 3 months it will become much easier. Change is hard and consistency is difficult but the reward of your actions is what your seeking.

I do have a few hobbies at uni, such as karting and just going out for walks, this issue is more for at home. With regards to things like TV shows, I think that that's a good 'end of the day' type thing when you want to wind down. Social media wise, I will probably quit eventually, I just don't know when.

Dont delay, quit now. And you will have to sacrifice TV shows or you will get a craving for social media. Make a sacrifice, its difficult short term, but its the long term that you are looking towards. What I do at home is reading books/novel, cooking and I tutor my younger siblings. If you dont have siblings at home just spend a hour a day calling your parents or just siblings.

Honestly, that may be the best option. I have sometimes thought about ditching social media, but I never did it because I'd lose contact with a lot of people. But, the ONLY reason I even got social media in the first place was simply because it was popular, and so I kinda just stuck with it.

Use apps like whatsapp and keep essential contacts i.e family and friends. Sadly I recently have become rather frequent on this forum. Am going to have to stop coming on it permanently before it becomes sort of addiction ahah.
Allow it

hey, I was just posting separately. I just had a chat in this app which gives away free counselling on the weekend. I spoke to Susan who helped me a lot, they have chats for free until midnight and then again next weekend. try it, tell people - it's so helpful, really fixed my for the week - called Wangie.App
I also study CS and I feel really called out by this post, because I can relate to it that much. It's definitely difficult to lower screen time especially when relaxing hobbies are also including technology.

It's something I'm working on too, but I've been able to improve things by reading more books, I've spent time going through my module reading list and making notes on the topics I've read, that in itself is studying and lowering your screen time a lot. If I'm listening to a lecture or something, instead of staring at the screen I turn the volume up and organise my things as I'm listening (it saves time too). It's also worth going on walks like you've mentioned and maybe take this time as an opportunity to pick up on new hobbies that could reduce your screen time like drawing or sports

- Hope this helps

I do take part in sports at uni. For example, I do karting near enough every month, and I may also do another sport as well next year if I feel like it. I also go on regular walks around my campus and town, but I think I need to do more. I reckon social media may have to be dropped, personally.
It's not entirely your fault, these social media platforms are intentionally designed to be as addictive as possible, and to take up as much of your time as possible. Former Facebook developers have said as much in talks and interviews.

A few years ago my broadband got cut off for a month due to a fault with my provider. Living out in the sticks there was no 4G signal, so I had literally no internet for four weeks. At first it was very difficult, but after a few days I just started finding things to do... I started reading more, going for walks, watching films, listening to albums, playing video games and actually paying attention instead of having one eye on YouTube the whole time.

My concentration level and attention span recovered massively and by the end of the first week I was actually enjoying the experience.

I want to tell you a little something.

I had a Reddit account recently. And I was an avid poster, in multiple subreddits. Nothing debatable at all. But I was active in the NoFap and Pornfree subreddits. The fool I was that I didn't know Reddit had this privacy option to be de-indexed from search engines. The funny thing is that even after deletion of these comments/posts/likes before deleting the account, when I searched my username on Reddit it was all visible. And some people know about my recovering porn addiction.

For the past 1 week, I have been scouring over the internet, searching for URLs to be removed. I then keep on sending requests to the search engines to remove those URLs. And it is working fabulously. Although slow, but we are making progress.

I dislike social media, particularly of the fact that nowadays, there is disregard to privacy.
I mean it's not actually your fault - those platforms are specifically designed for that purpose of monopolising your attention and encouraging you to spend a long time on them. It's quite perverse really...the entire premise of them is to promote unhealthy habits which ultimately make people usually feel worse, to maximise chances for ad revenue etc.
