Is more experience harmful for an apprenticeship?

Hello,
I note that most level 3/4 apprenticeships want barely any experience for it, but does it hurt if you do have experience (not in working, but just to sort of show your passion for it)? I may be reading too much into it haha but it always seems like they encourage you not to have it. Thanks
