Degree apprenticeship tips

Hi guys I'm in the middle of yr 12 and seriously considering a degree apprenticeship in like computer science or finance however when I researched them it turns out they are more competitive than Russel group uni and you have to stand out from the crowd I have about 8-10 months left before applying to any degree apprenticeship can you guys reccomend me some thing I should do now that'll help since my sixth form doesn't really help with these kind of stuff since they're into more of university.
Ask about completion rates. Across all degree apprenticeships only half of people who start finish and qualify.

You are correct it is competitive. Therefore it would be a good idea to keep your options open. Are you also applying for full time university for example?

I have already applied and had interviews with employers for degree apprenticeships and i would say that it would be beneficial to get any type of work experience, in the field you want to work in, for instance in finance i'm aware HSBC and Rothschild & co do work experience if your trying to get into banking. doing this could give you things to talk about when they ask why you want to work in the specific area rather than just completing a few MOOCs or reading some books, Another thing is that if your looking to go into the banking apprenticeships with GS or Deutsche Bank for example, they require higher grades than other ones, around AAA compared to the normal BBC/BBB.

Hi there,

Hope you're well. Just a bit of background on myself: current degree apprentice, received multiple offers (including a DTS/computer science offer), so I think I will be able to help you here.

First of all, don't worry - you have loads of time to gain experience to stand out from the crowd. A lot of the work I did to get my degree apprenticeships was during my Year 12 summer term.

Secondly, it is true - degree apprenticeships are more competitive. For example, Russell Group universities usually have an applications to admissions ratio of ~4:1 to 12:1. By comparison, apprenticeships can commonly have 30:1+ ratios. However, this is not the end of the world - getting degree apprenticeship offers is still very possible as long as you know the best things to do to prepare.

Finally, I can imagine how your sixth form doesn't really help with apprenticeships - barely any do - they are all entirely focused on university which is a shame, and hopefully this will change in the future.

In the meantime, I can help you and give you a roadmap of what to do in the next year. If you want, I can send you a few links which will show you in detail how you can improve your CV and stand out from the crowd over the next couple of months.

Otherwise, here's a quick to-do list of what I think you should do during the rest of Year 12:

MOOC on a topic that's relevant to the degree apprenticeship you want to go into - check out the websites Coursera/edX/FutureLearn

Work experience - can send you a link of best way to get this

Virtual work experience - check out Springpod/Speakers for Schools (I can also send you some links to opportunities in the DTS and finance sector which are open for applications now)

Deliver a presentation to a school society/club - shows confidence, communication skills, presentation skills, dedication and the ability to understand a topic enough to deliver it to a non-specialist audience

Hope that helps you - and gets around the issue of no help from sixth form - I faced this challenge too. Let me know if you want me to send over those links or if you have any questions.

Thats not a problem at all. Your A level choices will be absolutely fine - most degree apprenticeships only require maths.

For example here are a few apprenticeships and their requirements:

JLR DTS (stands for Digital and Technology Solutions which is the effectively computer science apprenticeship) - Maths + STEM related A level (e.g. Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science)

JP Morgan DTS - Maths A level

JP Morgan Finance apprenticeship - no specific subject required

Deutsche Bank Finance apprenticeship - no specific subject required

Would definitely recommend doing MOOCs as well regardless.

Hope that helps.
