year 12 a level chem question

Give the full electron configuration of the Ni2+ ion.

Why does the mark scheme say 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d8 (4s0) rather than 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d6?

Electrons are (usually) lost from the 4s sub shell before the 3d sub shell. So both electrons will be lost from the 4s sub shell for an Ni2+ ion
