27th June - National PTSD Awareness Day

Hello! My name’s Fatima and I’m pursuing an MSc degree in Marketing. I’d like to share information about an extremely important topic, which is PTSD and the options available to help those in need. This post also serves as means to remind them that they aren’t alone.

PTSD stands for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and the 27th of June is regarded as the National PTSD Awareness Day. PTSD intensely affects individuals and leaves a painful long- lasting impact. It acts as a never-ending burden. Previously, it was thought that PTSD is mainly experienced by war veterans. However, this is not the case. In fact, it even affects people who have suffered from violence or a brutal incident, scarring them for life. Hence, it is necessary to raise awareness about the multiple sources of help available to those facing PTSD.

The purpose behind observing National PTSD Awareness Day isn’t just to educate the masses, but to eradicate the stereotypical thought process and the stigma related to PTSD. Due to the fear of labels allocated by society, many individuals with PTSD refrain from seeking help and treatment. As a result, it is extremely important to acknowledge the hardships that such individuals go through and to offer support and care. Doing so, will form a healthy and safe environment.

People with PTSD experience problems with getting adequate sleep, facing people associated with the traumatic event, they might experience triggers and raging anxiety. With the passage of time, the severity of these symptoms might fade but seeking help is still recommended. The following are some beneficial options available to help those suffering from PTSD:

- Feel free to contact Samaritans, which is a national listening service through [email protected]. The Samaritans can also be contacted at 0330 0945717 as it is available 24 hours a day, throughout the year.

- ‘Student Minds’ is a student’s mental health charity, which is based in the United Kingdom. It can be accessed through the following link: https://www.studentminds.org.uk/. They encourage students to have healthy discussions regarding mental health problems.‘

- Students Against Depression’ is a website that seeks to help those suffering from depression, low moods, and suicidal thoughts. It explains emotions and offers resources accordingly. The website can be accessed through the following link: https://www.studentsagainstdepression.org/

- Other helpful mental health services include: ‘No Panic’ - https://nopanic.org.uk/ and ‘Kooth’ - https://www.kooth.com/.

The sources mentioned above will be extremely helpful for not only people with PTSD, but for anyone who is experiencing a negative change in their mental health. Hence, it is important to remember that there’s nothing wrong in seeking help yourself and from supporting others going through the same.
