should it be illegal to run a red light in the middle of the night on an empty road? what are some possible replies to this question?
Yes, because you never know what may come round the corner. Once you introduce an element of choice in whether or not to obey a traffic sign or red light you are heading into danger. Binary in this situation is the solution. In countries like France, some traffic lights flash amber between certain hours and so give the choice to the motorist but since (according to statistics) France has an accident rate that is almost twice that of the UK leaving the decision to the motorist does not seem to be a great idea.
