Calculus aint arithmetic. Or are you trying to divide the community?
Why did the student do multiplication problems on the floor?

The teacher told him not to use tables.

From birth? Until death? To the exclusion of all other studies?
No objections, I don’t think it’s especially controversial either.

I do think we need to optimise mathematics education though. Id like to see a more ambitious standard set, calculus & statistics eventually being included in the general education standard everyone leaves school with (although i think it will take several iterations of education reforms to get here).

I do believe mathematics is the most important general education subject in the 21st century.
