Which gives the highest bursary is that question you should be asking really. Most schools hire you as a Teacher rather than as a "Teacher of" which basically means they can get you to teach whatever they like. That said, I would decide if you want to specialise in History or English. The two are distinctly different subjects from a teaching perspective and require different skill sets.

Hi there!

It's exciting to hear you are thinking of doing a PGCE!

One of the entry requirements to do a PGCE is at least 50% of subject knowledge, so you should be able to do PGCE Secondary in either of those subjects. You can always consult 'Get Into Teaching' for further information

Hi @Hattie6 ,
you might specialize in a subject when you train but once you are qualified, you are qualified to teach any subject. Obviously, it would be easier if you trained in the subject you want to teach but you could apply for any other teaching post in a different subject as long as you have the knowledge to deliver the subject. It is quite common for teachers to have to teach another subject if they are under allocation ( not enough classes on their timetable) and a class needing to be taught in another subject.
However, I would advise you to train if you can in the subject you want to teach. English is a core subject and also a priority subject so it means there are more posts available and there is currently a greater need of English teachers than History teachers. However, it is important that you feel passionate about the subject you teach.
If you want to explore your options, I would suggest you get a teaching adviser, they would answer your questions and provide you with information so you can make an informed decision. All our advisers are experienced teachers and it is a free service. To get an adviser: https://getintoteaching.education.gov.uk/teacher-training-advisers

I hope this helps.
