Hi All,

My son is in the process of choosing the GCSE Subjects..
Apart from the core subjects, he must choose 3 specialist GCSE subjects. He is a bit confused about which 3 subjects to choose...

He is interested in going to medical school or business school.

Can you please let me know if the universities are looking for a specific GCSE subject?

I agree with the previous response regarding business - I took it and it was a great introduction to the subject, so would help him decide if it’s something he wants to pursue further. I’d also say taking a language is always beneficial due to the transferable skills gained from them.

Finally, it doesn’t matter hugely but for going into medicine or business I’d say subjects such as history/computer science/geography look better on an application than subjects like drama/food tech/art, plus they’ll be a bit more relevant. However, it’s true that A-Level subjects will be far more important, so as long as he picks GCSEs that he feels he’ll do well in then it’ll be fine.

I’m applying for medical school for entry 2024. I did French German textiles and Geography. For Medicine there are no requirements for which GCSEs you do most unis require 6 or above in maths English language and science subjects. I just chose the subjects that I was doing best in (German and French) and then chose the other ones based on which I found easier/ and enjoyed more. If he’s also considering business at a level and he enjoys it I don’t see any disadvantage as it can give him a helpful insight for a level and help him decide between medicine and business!! A lot of My friends who take business at a level, didn’t take it a gcse so he shouldn’t feel at a disadvantage if he doesn’t take it at gcse but wants to do it for a level!
