Can you substitute in positions 2 and 4 even if the directing group is 3 directing

For example the carboxylic acid on nitrobenzene is 3 directing but can you get methyl 4 nitrobenzoate

Do you mean the nitro group? If yes then these deactivating groups will deactivate all position but deactivate the meta or -3 position less, so you can get substituents on other positions as well. BTW you always get a mixture of products but the % of each in the mixture can vary a lot depending on the deactivating or activating group(s) attached
