Portsmouth vs Bath Spa

Hi, I’m year 13 planning on going to uni for September 2025, but I’m debating my choices. I’m planning on doing either Film production at university of Portsmouth or film/tv at Bath spa. They’re slightly different courses but I was wondering from people who are at either, what the unis are actually like to go to. Just general university life as it were. Thanks

They’re neither of them particularly known for film production - how did you narrow it down to these 2?

Do you have any particular hopes for what you want to use your degree to do?

Well I visited them and I really liked the campuses and the courses themselves seemed like something I’d want to do. Plus I’d heard from my teachers that in the past couple years loads of media students had been going to Portsmouth and Arts Bournemouth.

Film companies don’t use the guardian rankings

Go wherever you feel more at home. Rankings aren’t a huge matter these days unless it’s a top university like Oxford. Employers want to know what skills you have learnt etc. Weigh up the courses too and figure out which you would enjoy more, which city you’d prefer to spend your time in etc as it will be where you are based for the next 3/4 years.

My friend is also very interested in film production, especially screenwriting for film. He's also paying attention to Portsmouth. If Portsmouth isn't particular known on these, would you please offer your advice; which institutions we should consider? Thanks in advance!

As a general note, being near London allows for industry networking, plus lots of film production going on in the wilds of Surrey (Bray, Longcross, Shepperton, etc). Beyond the south east, Arts University Bournemouth has a good reputation for film and TV going back decades. As you've visited Bath Spa, you'll know that the Film and Screen Studies department is very well equipped. University life? Both AUB and BSU are away from their town centres. The town of Bournemouth has venues for stuff (and the beach, of course), but it’s too many years since I was there for campus comment. Bath is less of a party town. The main BSU campus is a picturesque gift for location filming but, the SU aside, can feel dead in the evenings and at weekends. HOWEVER, Bath is really close to Bristol and there is a lot going on there not just nightlife, but creatively.

Hey there sorry for jumping in on an older thread, but I thought this might still help anyone comparing film courses and considering London as their base! 😊
I’m a second-year Digital Media student at London Met, and our Film & TV Production course it’s worth a look if you’re keen on a super-hands-on, industry-focused degree right in the heart of London.
Check out this official course video for a feel of our TV studio in action Blackmagic cinema cameras, multi-camera switchers, pro audio desks and all:
On the course you will:

Shoot and edit narrative short films in Year 1 to learn the ropes of shot building and storyboarding

Tackle multi-camera TV show projects think campus news bulletins and magazine-style programmes in Year 2

Dive into documentaries, podcast units and online news packages that you plan, shoot and edit yourself

Benefit from guest masterclasses with BAFTA-winning directors, editors and cinematographers

Use industry-standard tools: Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, lighting grids, sound desks everything from day one

Plus, being at Holloway campus (between Islington and King’s Cross) means you’re right in London’s creative hub loads of networking, internships and weekend inspiration at your doorstep.
Even though Portsmouth and Bath Spa are great, studying in London gives you direct access to the media industry while you learn. I hope this helps anyone still weighing up their options! 😊
